Bleep43 returns to Corsica studios on Friday 1st October for another lovingly curated international lineup featuring Detroit's Urban Tribe, Convextion from Dallas, Legowelt and DJ Overdose from The Hague and upcoming producer Mariska from Ghent. Accompanying them on the night will be the UK's Plant43, Matt Whitehead and Matilda, alongside Bleep43 residents Toby Frith and Dan Bean.
This party will also be celebrating the launch of Bleep43's own record label with a 12" featuring tracks from two of the artists on the line up: Convextion and Plant43. Out on 4th October, the vinyl and digital EP also includes tracks from Bleep43 members Orphan and Jo Johnson.
A central part of London’s electronic music scene, Bleep43 have been organizing parties since 2002 and have entertained DJs such as Surgeon, Derrick May, Omar-S, Actress, Dan Bell and Donato Dozzy. Their website http://www.bleep43.com is also devoted to the distribution of information about electronic music with interviews and features on pioneers such as Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills alongside detailed reviews of the most intriguing releases across the spectrum. That’s complemented by a popular 90 minute weekly podcast hosted by resident DJ Toby Frith that now has over 175 episodes.
URBAN TRIBE
A diverse and often experimental project that continues to draw upon the talents of many musicians within the Motor City, Sherard Ingram's Urban Tribe achieved wide attention in 1996 with a landmark album for James Lavelle’s Mo'Wax label called “The Collapse of Urban Culture”. Featuring major contributions from Carl Craig, Kenny Dixon Jnr and Anthony Shakir, it became an instant classic. Differing slightly from his Urban Tribe work, Sherard Ingram is also known as DJ Stingray, an alias for hi-tempo electro material with releases on labels such as Rephlex, Trust, Pomelo and WeMe.
On the back of a series of singles and a critically acclaimed self-titled album on KDJ's Mahogani label released earlier this year, Bleep43 is proud to present Urban Tribe's live debut in London. With the emphasis very much on the sort of exploratory electronics that are a hallmark of the album, Ingram will be joined by two surprise guests from Detroit to demonstrate that forward-thinking dance music is still very much at the heart of that famous city.
LEGOWELT
Danny Wolfers has been making his eccentric hybrid of house, techno and electro for over a decade. Combining the analogue ghetto sleaze of Blake Baxter with the cinematic vision of his hero John Carpenter, Wolfers brings a refreshing dose of individuality to his chosen genres . A resident of The Hague, he has been a central figure in that city's musical rebirth, helped by a string of singles on key labels such as Bunker, Ghostly and Creme Organisation. For Bleep43 Wolfers is doing something different, playing a very rare live 90 minute synthesizer set of the highly atmospheric Franz Falckenhaus material he releases on his own Strange Life label.
CONVEXTION
Gerard Hanson made such an impression on his European debut for Bleep43 back in 2006 that he has returned to play for us on a regular basis. A resident of Dallas, Hanson's early material in the mid-90's on Detroit label Matrix was championed by Derrick May and Juan Atkins. After a period of relative hibernation, Hanson returned with a critically acclaimed debut album on DownLow and a number of powerful singles including "Lament Rosa" and "Vox Automaton" on Frustrated Funk. Very much a favourite of the techno connoisseur, his atmospheric take on the genre has seen him play at Fabric, Berghain and the Labryinth festival in Japan. A second album is due out as he hits our shores.
DJ OVERDOSE
Alongside Detroit and Berlin, Bleep43 has shown much love for the Hague over the last few years, a city that has contributed much to electronic music in the last decade. Following in the footsteps of Legowelt and I-F, DJ Overdose brings with him 20 years of experience as an electro DJ but with his foot firmly in the genre's roots, never afraid to mix up hiphop with boogie and funk. He's also a producer with releases on labels such as Lunar Disko, Strange Life and Panama Racing, and last but not least, works with synth master Alden Tyrell on the downbeat Hasbeens Project.
PLANT43
Co-founder and visual orchestrator of Bleep43, Emile Facey has been crafting his luminous take on electro since 2000. Taking influence from Kraftwerk and the powerful emotions of Drexciya, his eagerly anticipated debut album on celebrated label Ai Records is out in September after a number of singles released since 2006. A regular performer for Bleep43 since 2002, he has also played in Athens, Turin and Riga.
MATT WHITEHEAD
Fresh from a show-stopping performance at Bloc earlier this year, Matt Whitehead plays at Bleep43 for the first time. A part of the evergreen Rebel Intelligence label, Matt’s first two singles, including the recent “Raw Deal” EP demonstrated a rare ability to merge party dynamics with the vintage sounds of electro and early Chicago House.
MARISKA
Joining us from Belgium for her live debut will be Mariska Neerman. Hot on the back of an acclaimed track contribution to Sherard Ingram’s recent Urban Tribe release on Planet E, we’re looking forward to her intriguing synthesis of melodic electro and techno.
