  • It may come as a bit of a shock, but the dancefloor vagrant that is Caravan Recordings is coming home to roost, bringing Bristol a much-needed injection of heart and soul, raw, shocking, and above all jacking dance music. For some three years now October’s Caravan imprint has been pushing a weird and wonderful brew of 4/4, and the time has come to bring that particular vision into the club, and give the night-people of Bristol an alternative to bass-driven steppers. As statements of intent go, booking Kassem Mosse says a lot about what Caravan want to do with this party. The plucky German has taken an uncompromisingly unusual route with his music, whether it be putting out freaked-out house music on his Workshop label, or producing his own wide-ranging take on oddball four-to-the-floor. Just check his release for Instra:Mental’s Nonplus records, where tough, low-slung house sits on the flip of frantic, broken drum machine techno. He’ll be packing a veritable arsenal of analogue hardware and playing 100% live when he comes to play for the mobile home enthusiasts. Chances to see techno played this way don’t come often in Bristol. Of course, this party is a family affair as well, and Caravan aren’t short on talent to draw upon. This is October’s baby, and you can expect to see him cranking out the kind of sweaty, feverish house and techno that was best made in 1989, while industrial-strength beat renegade Emptyset will be packing fist-pumping, floor-smashing tracks of the highest calibre. Working as close allies of the Caravan crew, Kowton and Chris Farrell are representing the Idle Hands stable. It’s hard to have missed Kowton’s form of late, plumbing murky depths to bring some swing and step into sparse drone music with his releases on Idle and Keysound. While the main room jacks away into infinity, the rest of Timbuk2 will be honed and tweaked to become the perfect nightclub vessel it always promises to be; a dark, sexy, emotionally intense labyrinth of underground music in a basement. Where else could music like this work? It’s a good time for exciting electronic music in Bristol; a healthy undercurrent of adventurous producers and enthusiastic promoters are sparking the flares to re-invigorate the scene. Dubstep’s been great for however many years, but at the end of the day, it’s just not techno.
