Red Bull Music Academy presents The Bunker x Dekmantel

  • Amsterdam’s Dekmantel and New York City’s The Bunker are two of modern techno’s most respected institutions, and we’re excited to join them at Brooklyn’s Good Room for a night of dark and driving electronic music. A label, a party and a festival, Dekmantel has quickly emerged as one of Europe’s techno bastions. Their imprint has featured the likes of Joey Anderson, Juju & Jordash and RBMA 2014 alumnus Palms Trax among their ranks, all of whom will perform in the comfy, back-to-basics environs of this Greenpoint club. Support will come from the Dekmantel Sound System and Bunker founder and resident Bryan Kasenic, as well as Bunker affiliates Antenes and Clay Wilson. JUJU & JORDASH Dekmantel LIVE Juju & Jordash found one another through weekly be-bop jams back in the mid 90s, with Juju on guitar and Jordash on piano. Throughout the 1990s, each played in and composed for various jazz and experimental combos by day and, by cover of night, danced in clubs and experimented with synthesizers, drum machines and dance music. J&J have released numerous EPs, LPs and remixes since 2004 on record labels such as Dekmantel and Golf Channel Recordings, and on Workshop and Off Minor Recordings as Magic Mountain High, together with David Moufang (aka Move D), as well as several ambient, film soundtracks and multimedia projects. J&J's fully improvised hardware live shows have been highly regarded in the past few years for their musicality and versatility. https://soundcloud.com/jujujordash __________________________ JOEY ANDERSON Dekmantel, Inimeg, New Jersey Joey Anderson was born in Hoboken New Jersey. Educated, since the age of thirteen in the arts of “Underground House Dancing” As a result of doing so, tasted the fruit of what is called the “renaissance” period of House Music in New York and New Jersey. Joey later started to teach dance classes in Fazil’s dance studio, which down the road lead to many performances in Japan and U.S. As Joey Anderson’s hunger grew as an artist on the dance floor, so did his relationship with music and then the need to produce music that incorporated his feelings and visions as a dancer. Joey has released three tracks with Exchange Place, which are under the label Strength Music, and has more recently launched his own label, Inimeg Recordings. First release entitled Organisms, Inimeg Recordings being a dedication for the certain peoples Horoscope spelled backward (Gemini) that coached Joey Anderson to produce and start his own label. https://soundcloud.com/joey-anderson __________________________ PALMS TRAX Dekmantel, Lobster Theremin, Berlin Palms Trax is a producer and Dj based in Berlin, Germany. What began as an experiment in pad-driven Detroit workouts soon became Palms Trax calling card, the young producer building valve-heated, dust-treated slabs of house in his home studio, shot through with melodic synths and smooth, undulating drum patterns that recalls the likes of Legowelt, John Heckle, Tevo Howard, and Nu-Groove era Burrell Brothers. His first record was released in October of 2013 on London-based imprint Lobster Theremin. https://soundcloud.com/palmstrax __________________________ DEKMANTEL SOUNDSYSTEM Dekmantel, Amsterdam The Dekmantel Soundsystem crew have firmly established themselves as kings of high quality musical enjoyment in more ways than one. The Dutch collective spearheaded by Thomas Martojo and Casper Tielrooij are responsible for a revered underground label, a much loved three day festival and a Soundsystem DJ crew that cover many different bases. The Dekmantel Soundsystem, which sees Thomas Martojo, Casper Tielrooij and Jan van Kampen dig deep into their record bags and play mesmeric back to back to back sets that are fully of seductive surprises and groovy gems, offers a tasteful and 360 degree take on electronic music that has truly helped put the Netherlands and its scene on the map in recent years. https://soundcloud.com/dkmntl __________________________ ANTENES LIES, Brooklyn Antenes is one of a few projects that Lori Napoleon is behind. Aside from hand building synths to perform her own music as Meridian7, she has also released an EP on L.I.E.S. as Antenes, and has more material in the works. She's also working on a release under a different name for The Bunker New York, which will hopefully be out in 2016. https://soundcloud.com/antenes __________________________ CLAY WILSON The Bunker New York, Brooklyn Clay Wilson’s life story is, for the most part, a mystery. Little is known about the 26-year-old producer, who began turning heads with mesmerizing tracks from his home base in Brooklyn last year. The deeply psychedelic groove of Clay’s debut release for Brooklyn's Styles Upon Styles’ Bangers and Ash series immediately caught our attention. Before Wilson started making techno, he studied improvisation at music school in upstate New York. Wilson played bass, studying with noted jazz musicians who had worked with Ornette Coleman, Alice Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and many artists who recorded for the ECM label. He counts Coleman, Coltrane, and Art Ensemble of Chicago among his major inspirations. You can sense the subtle traces of Wilson’s avant-garde jazz training in his techno. You can hear the shifting layers of intriguing textures in the music, his deep understanding of the low end, of arranging and composition, of form. “Understanding the foundation of form has allowed me to not worry so much about putting loops into a full ‘song’, which seems to be a common thing with electronic music,” he says. “I think the textures kind of come from trying to get away from standard musical ideas.” While nerding out over our mutual love of fine craft beers and deep techno, we asked Wilson to create some music for our (then hypothetical) new label, and he obliged, in spades. Wilson was already a big fan of The Bunker, and a regular at our parties. He had already started making music before experiencing The Bunker, but the sound of the party inspired him massively, and helped him to refine his own aesthetic. He was deeply moved by Bunker sets by Voices From The Lake, Demdike Stare, Peter Van Hoesen, the Interdimensional Transmissions crew, Bee Mask, Atom™, Tobias, and many more. https://soundcloud.com/claywilson
