On December 2nd, the Mord Symphony Orchestra, directed by Rotterdam’s Bas Mooy, will present a marvelous program of classical music comprised of Bas’s own compositions and those of other fine European and American composers. Given the beauty of these pieces and the historically remarkable performances delivered by the orchestra and soloists Bas Mooy and UVB in the past, it is axiomatic that this will be a memorable night.
The Russian-born soloist Olga Romanova will open the evening with a classic Russian sonata-form allegro, followed by a slow movement, a minuet and trio, and a rondo finale inspired by the romance songs of the Russian gypsies, and also by some late 18th-century Hungarian folk-tunes. The performance is rumored to feature a captivating yet very difficult violin part that the soloist will hopefully be able to brilliantly handle. Indeed, Romanova has given very expressive performances in the past at the New York City concert hall Bossa, showing outstanding technique and virtuosity.
Immediately following Romanova’s fling with the Russian Romantics, the Mord Symphony Orchestra—UVB and Bas Mooy, to be precise—will follow through with heavier Expositions #1 and #2, piano solos, recapitulations, cadenzas and a coda to remember. Those who have been following Mord Orchestra’s latest exploits will resoundingly agree—we are in for a treat!
After intermission, the heaviest part of the program, Volvox’s 4th Symphony, will follow. Given its huge proportions and #feels, this symphony may get somewhat dark and excessively heavy at times; nevertheless, it is among Volvox’s most beautiful symphonies and her performance of it earlier in the year clearly showed this.
Overall, the whole orchestra, admirably conducted by Mr Mooy, will undoubtedly deliver an outstanding performance, completely enjoyable and impressive.
