In today’s political climate, there is a renewed sense of urgency to curate creative projects that matter. We are thrilled to present Noncompliant aka DJ Shiva and Detroit’s “First Lady of Wax,” DJ Minx for the next installation of our summer music series Friday, August 4.
For over a decade these Midwestern artists have made a difference in the scene, spinning their way across the world while releasing a steady of flow of recordings that embody all the things we love about house and techno music: grittiness, funk, percussiveness, and style.
DJ Minx cut her teeth as an engineer and radio host for “Deep Space Radio,” an electronic music program on Detroit’s WPGR station that strictly plays “music curated by the greatest minds in Detroit Techno.” As DJ Minx’s artistry took shape and her reputation for being a certified techno-head grew (according to the Belleville Three), she began reaching for more than just vinyl. After becoming a resident of the legendary Club Motor, opening for artists such as Afrika Bambaataa and Basement Jaxx, DJ Minx used her platform to create Women on Wax (WOW). WOW is a Detroit-based collective turned independent electronic music label that creates visibility for women. Hailed as “One of the Best House Music DJs of All Time,” by Time Out New York, DJ Minx has emerged as must-know artist.
With the stage name Noncompliant, it’s no surprise that DJ Shiva is disrupting the status-quo in techno with her latest remix of “Pantheon” by John Barera & Paul Morse. The remix is an unapologetically gritty and nostalgic flip on the playful original that blends buzzing synth lines with a pulsating beat. For more than two decades DJ Shiva has consistently dropped refreshing projects like, “Gays Hate Techno,” a compilation of tracks for what she describes as “an obsessive network of queer techno fans, artists, DJs, producers, and nerds.” Producers and dancers alike know DJ Shiva for her versatility and style in the booth.
