  • We've invited two of the biggest names in dance music academia to discuss the influence of dance music on your subconscious, and the future of London's vibrant but threatened nightlife.
  • What influence does dance music have on your subconscious? Are you concerned about the future of London’s vibrant but threatened nightlife? In the first event of its kind, Resident Advisor is pleased to invite two of the biggest names in dance music academia, to explore and dissect the answers to these questions. The evening, which is part of the War Child Film Festival, will also feature the debut public screening of Real Scenes: London. Ethnomusicologist and RA contributor Luis-Manuel Garcia is someone who's turned a critical eye on aspects of nightlife culture that pass most of us by as we rave through the night. Responsible for key RA features, such as ‘An alternate history of sexuality in club culture’ and 'Drugs policies and electronic music culture', we’re very excited to welcome him to the stage. He'll dissect the cultural evolution of London’s nightlife: its past and future, highs and lows. Dr Beate Peter is a senior lecturer at Manchester Met University. Her experiences at the heart of Berlin’s dance music scene led to a PhD on club culture and the unconscious. Dr Peter will give a talk exploring the unity of the body and soul in dance music. Drawing on Carl Gustav Jung, who distinguishes between personal unconscious and collective unconscious, she will argue that dancing allows us to access our collective unconscious and consequently, a more fully discovered self. To round the evening off, we’ll be screening RA documentary Real Scenes: London publicly for the first time since its release. The film explores London’s ever-changing musical landscape, speaking to the key artists, promoters and venue owners who are trying to stay afloat. All profits, ticket sales and booking fees will be donated to War Child. £5 donation on the door would be welcomed. War Child is striving for a world where children’s lives are no longer torn apart by war. We protect, educate and stand up for the rights of children caught up in conflict. We aim to reach children as early as possible when conflict breaks out, and stay to support them through their recovery - helping to keep them safe, give them an education, and equip them with skills for the future.
