"To weave fabric [...] is to construct a striated space, one that is crisscrossed with lines, the lines assigned prescribed functions, its production contained within set bounds, and its dimensions clearly demarcated. To create felt, by contrast, is to construct a smooth space. In felt, threads are not separated; instead, fibers are entangled by being pressed together, the microscopic variations in the fibers allowing unpredictable interconnections and adhesions. In this regard, though felt forms a smooth space, its elements are heterogeneous.
