Live 8 in the Studio: 'The Production Process & Beyond'
We understand that mastering workflow methods and moving projects through the entire production process can be quite a challenge, for both aspiring and experienced producers alike. To address this, carefully selected artists/instructors will complete an original track and guide participants through the creative process of music making - start to finish...live! To begin, KJ Sawka (a master drummer and producer) will demonstrate and create customized drum and instrument rack set-ups from his own live recordings. Next, DJ Kiva will begin to construct a song by introducing bass, synth lines, and vocals to KJ's drums. After moving the track from session view to arrange view, Jon Margulies will take over and detail creative and efficient methods for finishing your mixes. Finally, Daniel Wyatt, a talented veteran engineer, will discuss mastering techniques for creating professional, finalized products. The final session of the day will see techno legend Richie Hawtin and his label-mate Ambivalent giving their own take on the process as a whole, covering unique tricks and strategies that help them forge the sounds of MInus.
11-12pm > KJ Sawka: Drums...!
Kevin will open the day, and drawing on his virtuoso drumming abilities create a customized Ableton instrument rack from scratch. After recording his own drums, he will use Live to infuse his acoustic samples with next-generation electronic jungle, dubstep, drums 'n' bass, and techno. Add to this the power of samplers, laptops and drum triggers, and he's a veritable orchestra of percussive wizardry.
12-1pm > DJ Kiva: Beats, Bass, Melody...
Using KJ's creations, Kiva will begin the creation an original song in Ableton using the APC40. While incorporating the drums from the first presentation, he will present efficient workflow methods for adding other elements such as synth lines, vocals and more, then move the mix from the session view into the arrange view.

1:30 - 2:30 > Jon Margulies: Polish and Refine
DJ/ Producer and author of Ableton Live 7 (and 8) Power! Jon Margulies will draw on KJ's and Kiva’s creations, while filling in the blanks to demonstrating how to mix and refine your arrangement. See how to truly get your track ready for mastering by tying together loose ends that are often forgotten or overlooked.
3-4pm > Daniel Wyatt: The Art of Mastering
Dan will be show why Rawkus Records, Curtis Mayfield, Thievery Corp., the Roots, Ultra Records, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Nora Jones, Blues Traveler, and 50 Cent have trusted him to mix and master their tracks. Learn strategies to transform your composition into a commercially competitive, ready-for-market master by using tried and true mixing and mastering techniques incorporated into the Ableton environment. Create digital masters that are ready for the club, TV, film & video games.
4:30 - 6:00pm > Richie Hawtin & Ambivalant: Minus meets DubSpot
We will be talking technology with Rich & Kevin and will continue to explore the creative process. Kevin McHugh (aka Ambivalent) will demonstrate his own creative Live methods like unique application of pitch bends and portamento, as well as side-chaining for rythmic composition, or maybe 'fun with voices' and 'stereo field wierdness'... we are as curious as you are...
6:30 - 9:30pm > DubSpot & Create Digital Music present 'Control'
A wind down and chill session with attendees and presenters, plus demonstrations by the team at Create Digital Music with live sounds and unusual interfaces for interacting with Ableton Live.
