You might recognise Charles Drakeford’s face from Boiler Room – he’s been a key part of the operation as a programmer and host for years – but there’s a hell of a lot more to the man who is, for our money, one of the most underrated DJs in the UK at the moment.
Involved with NTS since the early days, Drakeford cut his teeth as a radio DJ, hosting the regular FTD (From the Depths) show, and it really comes through in his selections, which jump between UK techno, 90s Detroit, dancehall, 80s industrial and more with consummate ease.
At the tail end of 2014, FTD made the jump from radio show to record label, and in the 3 years since, Drakeford has put out left-leaning oddball jams from the likes of Lutto Lento, Niagara, DJML and Bandshell. No one genre defines the 8 releases that have so far come out on FTD, but much like Drakeford’s DJing, there is a shared sense of innovation and a disregard for conventions.
It’s the first time Drakeford has ventured up to Oxford and we can’t wait to see what he pulls out for his 3h extended set.
