  • To warm us up for a weekend of Sónar Reykjavík, Red Bull Music presents a club night in the legendary Gamla Nýló basement venue at Kex Hostel with performances from Konx-Om-Pax, Captain Fufanu, Hermigervill and Án. This is a free event* *Individuals with a Sónar Reykjavík wristband have priority access in the case of a queue. (artwork by Konx-Om-Pax) Konx-om-Pax Tom Scholefield is one of electronic music's finest designers creating sleeves and videos for a who's who of experimental artists and labels. Saturated neon colours, classic '80s sci-fi and early modernist cues are recurrent themes in a vivid aesthetic that's instantly recognisable. Helping shape the looks of Oneohtrix Point Never, Hudson Mohawke and Kuedo. But while learning his trade, he was booking the likes of Autechre and Squarepusher and running knees deep in a Glaswegian scene home to everyone from Rustie to Optimo, Eclair Fifi and the Numbers crew. For Scholefield, the language of design and music production cross over. As a producer, he's released two LPs on Planet Mu, the first of which was a resolutely melancholy and grainy take on pastoral IDM, shaped by living alone in Glasgow. In contrast, his last LP, Caramel, is a high-definition environment created during a move from his hometown to Berlin. Most Recently “Refresher” has been gaining support from Ben UFO and getting plays on the dancefloors of Berghain to catwalks of Paris. A new album of club focused music is in the works for Planet Mu for 2018 Captain Fufanu A household name in Iceland’s club culture, Captain Fufanu are well known for their full throttle four to the floor punk spirit. Their stage performance is driven with synths and gear, which is controlled without any thoughts about a certain musical path; a true machines-need-love journey. Formed in 2008, by then 15-year old Hrafnkell Kaktus Einarsson and Guðlaugur Halldór Einarsson, the duo were quick to make a permanent mark on the Reykjavík nightlife. In 2013, the project took a turn as they added a new member, drummer Erling Bang, and became the rock outfit Fufanu. This formation has seen the band on tour extensively with headline shows all around Europe and supporting artists such as Gorillaz, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and John Grant. As a special treat for Sónar Reykjavík, Captain Fufanu will be going back to their roots to provide us with an authentic analog techno affair in the basement of Kex Hostel. Hermigervill Hermigervill is one of Iceland's top electronic wizards. Working behind the scenes and on stage with many of the little country's most popular groups including Retro Stefson, Berndsen, FM Belfast, Sturla Atlas, Kira Kira and countless others, his sound has made a great impact on the Icelandic music scene for years. His live show, which has toured all over the world, is like no other, mixing analog synths, drum machines and a theremin into an unparalleled party vibe. Án A minimalistic electronic sound embodies Ljóstillífun, Án‘s debut EP. Elvar Smári Júlíusson is Án, after years of dabbling with electronic music. Ljóstillífun is the outcome, while also being the product of his art studies. Though synthesizers and bass drums create an electronic atmosphere, the sound is built around the piano, giving it a human touch. Elvar Smári Júlíusson is born in 1995 and studies at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. He started to make music under the moniker Án in the winter of 2015. Musically he doesn‘t come from the traditional electronic environment, but instead has been influenced by post-rock and jazz. The icelandic electronic scene is a recent influence for him. More music can be expected under the name of Án, and as a producer.
