  • King returns to us for one of his classic Deep Space sets, taking the dance floor on a trip to a range of constellations. He'll also give us new material from his upcoming EP. François K. will be joined by a special guest (to be announced soon!) to bring in the spring equinox. King Britt firmly believes that creativity is unsound when one’s heart isn’t in it; a conviction that demonstrates his commitment to genuine artistic expression. In conducting his life, King Britt has inadvertently dodged being labeled. Raised on his father’s funk and soul, King’s mother would take him to visit her friend Sun Ra, Afrofuturism pioneer, in his Philadelphia home. Sun Ra became one of Kings’s greatest musical influences (and we should add a major influence on those of us behind Deep Space as well!) King became the original DJ of the Grammy Award winning Digable Planets. After a world-wide tour, King decided to leave Digables at the height of their success to focus on his DJing (house, techno, hip-hop, soul), and production aspirations. Since then, King has continued to DJ globally, spinning in every continent except Antartica. Over the decades, King has played at thousands of clubs and festivals including AfroPunk (NYC), Berghain (Berlin), Liquid (Tokyo), Capital (Johannesburg), Rex (Paris), Fabric (London), Output (Brooklyn), SummerStage (NYC), and Moogfest (Asheville). In the late eighties, King and future techno genius Josh Wink began collaborating on music productions. After Strictly Rhythm released “Tribal Confusion,” the duo’s first commercial success, King and Wink founded Ovum Recordings, which introduced budding phenom poet Ursula Rucker. King produced the albums When the Funk Hits the Fan, and Re-Members Only (featuring Grover Washington Jr., De La Soul, Kathy Sledge, and others). Post-Ovum, King’s solo work and remixes became integral to the changing landscape of dance music. Josh One “Contemplation” (King Britt Funke Mix) has become an Ibiza anthem along with Gus Gus “David” (King Britt Scuba Mix) and H-Foundation “Tonight” (King Britt Scuba Mix). A few other highlights include: Adventures In Lo-Fi (BBE) featuring Madlib, Ivana Santilli, Dice Raw; King Britt presents: Sister Gertrude Morgan (Rope A Dope Records, Preservation Hall Recordings); “I Decided” Solange, and King Britt FiveSix Mix (Sony). Carl Hancock Rux is an American poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, actor, director, singer/ songwriter. He is the author of several books including the Village Voice Literary Prize winning, "Pagan Operetta" , the novel Asphalt (novel) and the OBIE award-winning play Talk, as well as a frequent collaborator in the fields of dance, theater, opera, film, and contemporary art . Rux is also a singer/songwriter with five CDs to his credit, including his critically acclaimed debut Rux Revue (Sony 550), Apothecary Rx (listed in in Philippe Robert's “Great Black Music: Un Parcours en 100 Albums Essentiels” as one of the greatest black music albums of all time, along with records by Billie Holiday, Howlin' Wolf, Max Roach) and most recently, Homeostasis (CD Baby). Most recently returned from a sold out concert at the Maison Des Art Creteil, Paris/Sons D’Hiver Music Festival, Rux is described by ROLLING STONE as " "A master storyteller with a voice reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, the plainspoken delivery of Lou Reed with the lyrical concerns of Ralph Ellison...Brazenly intellectual, unapologetically analytical, Rux weighs his words carefully, sanding them down and splitting them when necessary to make his point. Like Gil-Scott Heron, Rux marries lyric poetry to funk beats. Like PJ Harvey, he erects dramatic psychological tableaux to explore his personal history and identity with a novelist's eye for raw detail...and spins them into rugged funk-rock meditations...Slayer of sacred cows, avoider of easy-ways-out and rider of reality and rhythm, Rux earns your ear.” Deep Space is the legendary party in NYC. Awarded many times as the “best party in New York City,” with “best resident dj” François K., Deep Space is now a monthly party, Wednesdays at club Output in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. For 13 years Deep Space ran as a weekly party at Cielo. Known as an adventure into future dub, spacey vibes, and abstract grooves, Deep Space features dj’s, musicians, dancers and poets who represent a breathtaking range of styles celebrating dub’s impact on so many forms of art. The party encourages the creative use of technology in the mixing booth and on stage. Dj’s are invited to play signature “Deep Space sets” which are notably eclectic, spacey, and imaginative, while drawing dancers onto the club’s floor.
