  • On three nights, the Wiener Festwochen will be featuring experimental electronic music in the context of global club cultures and opening up a space for projects situated at the interface between performance, pop, and visual arts. The club as a place where society’s constraints and mechanisms are suspended – and where a new sort of society can be conceived and tested – is the overarching idea of HYPERREALITY’s programming. It’s at an ever-increasing pace, in today’s world, that various forms of repression are becoming normal and limitations on our personal freedom as well as the casualisation of work and life’s other realities are coming to be accepted as the status quo. But what happens if we take the on-going establishment of new realities not as a threat, but as an opportunity? Namely: by defining the club as a paradigm-free realm of possibilities in which the established meanings of notions such as gender, sexuality, or skin colour are called into question. This gives rise to a new and open form of “normalcy” that can be lived in the nocturnal here and beyond. It’s a context within which music can serve as a contemporary witness and as a means of both expression and liberation. Arca, in his performances and videos, stages himself as a surreal “shapeshifter” who elucidates the multidimensional complexity of fluid identities in a way that’s charged with cultural symbolism. The songs of Kelela, who works with one foot in the underground and the other in pop, deal with power structures on the interpersonal level, in doing so making a theme of the destructive influence wielded by so-called core cultures. And 2017 saw the rapper Taktloss—working under the pseudonym REAL GEIZT—release a post-dadaist rap album that holds up a dark mirror to the kind of rap that’s merely popular and bereft of any actual resistance. Expanding and breaking out of established structures is important to HYPERRALITY in terms of both content and form. And with the Zusammenbau and the Materialmagazin of F23, a former coffin factory, 2018 will see specially adapted spaces open their doors to this festival for club culture. Tickets for the Zusammenbau and the Materialmagazin can be purchased separately. Furthermore, a limited number of day passes for 25 and 26 May are available.
