10 Years Of Opilec Music
Opilec Music has established itself as one of the foremost authorities in the underground electronic scene over the last ten years. It has done this under the charge of label boss, DJ, producer and historian I-Robots, who has overseen a steady stream of carefully curated reissues, essential compilations of genre defining sounds and new music from a mix of both upcoming and established names from around the world.
For Opliec Music, like owner I-Robots aka Gianluca Pandullo, no sound is taboo, dealing in everything from Italo to funk, afro to disco, house to techno and electro to dub. Lovingly assembled releases often tell the story of the early connections between Italo, Detroit and the European house and techno sound, as well as unearthing the roots of these scenes and offering up modern reinterpretations.
As such the imprint has worked with pioneering talents like Giorgio Moroder, Klein & M.B.O., Gaznevada, N.O.I.A., No More, Yello, Ahzz, Shalktreis Wassermann, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Orlando Voorn, Ron "DJ Skull" Maney, S'Express, Virgo Four, Chez Damier, Todd Terje, Lindstrom & Prins Thomas, Santiago Salazar, Donna McGhee, Gene Hunt, Mr Raoul K, Santiago Salazar, Kuniyuki Takahashi, Hiroshi Watanabe/Kaito, Jordan Fields, The Units, Radio Slave, Danielle Baldelli and many, many more.
Support comes in for the label from established DJs like DJ Harvey, Francois Kevorkian and Michael Mayer, while Resident Advisor, the BBC, Mixmag and many other key media outlets often write fondly of the releases, which come both on vinyl and in digital formats, often with specially commissioned artwork.
The most recent project has been a compilation that pulls together all I-Robots’s most essential reconstructions, edits, remixes and reworks from 2007 to 2017. Arriving in two parts, Chapter I is dedicated to the 70s and 80s old school sound, while Chapter II focusses on the 90s and new school sounds and artists, and together the release proves that this label has vast reserves of knowledge and understanding when it comes to disco, house, techno, Italo, cosmic, synth wave, krautrock and plenty more.
Without Opilec Music and the tireless work of label head I-Robots plenty of classic sounds would remain forgotten, out of print records would be out of reach of collectors and the fascinating back stories to these famous sounds would remain untold. In short, it is one of the most essential labels out there when it comes to connecting the past with the present.
To mark the label’s first decade in existence, I-Robots will be hosting a series of label showcases featuring a selection of acts from the label, bookings are now being taken for the coming months so please contact [email protected] if you would like to discuss this in more detail.
