Kevin Drumm / Cameron Shafii

  • Cameron Shafii is an Iranian composer practicing electronic and electroacoustic music. His compositions are inflected with a host of digital synthesis processes and are informed by aspects of acousmatic theory, particularly spectromorphology. His works do not impose any temporal scheme upon the listener - rejecting the semiotic operation of 'engagement/disengagement'. ‘Pithy & Prolix’ and ‘Corpora Vilia’ - his recent pieces published on the Anòmia and Conditional labels - present asymmetrical narratives that articulate tension, amorphous forms, and complex sonorities, signifiying a plurality of meaning and complication. Shafii has performed at concerts, festivals, and workshops, and has exhibited installations in the US and Canada. He runs the Ge-stell label and is based in Philadelphia, where he is pursuing a Ph.D. in German at the University of Pennsylvania. http://cameronshafii.com/ Emerging from the city’s improvised music scene, in the 1990s Kevin Drumm became one of the world’s pre-eminent prepared guitar players. Since then his work has expanded to include electroacoustic compositions and live electronic music made with laptop computers and analog modular synthesizers. His early recordings contain mostly sparse, quiet sounds; recent works have been more loud and dense. Drumm’s work draws upon musique concrète, free improvisation, and noise music. He is also a black metal fanatic. Drumm has collaborated with many artists working in similar fields, including Japanese guitarist Taku Sugiomoto, Canadian turntabilst Martin Tétreault, and German trumpeter Axel Dörner, among others. Drumm made his solo debut with the eponymous release ‘Kevin Drumm’ in 1997 and has since released well over 30 records. https://kevindrumm.bandcamp.com/
