O Yuki Conjugate (OYC) formed in Nottingham, England in 1982 at the tail end of the post punk DIY scene. They have been in existence for 35 years, taking long hibernations away from music. They are currently in their fourth incarnation with two original members Roger Horberry and Andrew Hulme.
They have released few recordings over such a long period of time, approximately 9 albums including various retrospectives.
Their music, originally inspired by Cabaret Voltaire, Durutti Column and Jon Hassell, now sounds none of these artists. They found their own sound very quickly in the 80s and have ploughed a singular furrow ever since. The 90s saw them attain some recognition with their works ‘Peyote’ and ‘Equator’ establishing them in Europe and the US before they disappeared into a ‘hibernation’ for a decade. Their music has been labelled variously as post-industrial, cold wave, ambient, tribal ambient, fourth world etc. These are categories the band refute and prefer the term ‘dirty ambient’ - they also like to think of themselves as the 'missing link between punk and ambient’.
OYC have played very few concerts in their 35 year lifespan. Currently they are in a creative period that has seen 10 European concerts in the space of three months. They always use backing visuals created by filmmaker Hulme, currently they are playing with a specifically designed film that houses a dream-like narrative tied to their music.
OYC will also be performing as their alter ego group Ocean Youth Club. This is the debut appearance of their side project.
