  • "Detroit-Berlin: One Circle" explores the intense relationship between two repeatedly written-off and yet symbolically charged places. Centers that emit an almost mythological austerity, (anti) glamor with the immediately associated images of fallow civilization ruins. But above all, two cities that have been inextricably linked in pop cultural consciousness since the 1980s due to the rapid development and spread of techno. However, the festival is not limited to the rich musical exchange, but also includes the equally productive fields of artistic and urban-political debates. The reception and distribution of techno in Detroit in the 1980s - a sound that opposed the decline of the Fordist city after the beginning of de-industrialization, with its utopian images of the future - led to the development of Berlin becoming a metropolis for electronic music. HAU (Hebbel am Ufer), in cooperation with "The Potential - Subcultural Exchange For Urban Development", takes account of this not only historic, but also continuously significant circumstance during a club night in the Tresor Berlin. In addition, a genre is given focus that is far too rarely considered in this context: Female Hip Hop with Miz Korona & The Corona Effect, Ché & Dj Stacye J and AWA - African Women Arise. In addition to a Surprise Act from Detroit, Mike Huckaby will present the Sun Ra Reel-to-Reel sessions with Richard Zepezauer and Lakuti. In discussions between Detroit & Berlin cultural producers and urban researchers, the question of the potential spaces for cultural innovators in the post-industrial city will be explored. In a direct comparison of cities, it entails on the one hand a critique of political and private players with Ingrid LaFleur and Cornelius Harris dealing with topics of gentrification, expulsion and austerity, but on the other hand the well-known consequences of “urban boosterism” is analyzed, which is the first economic resource seen in the urban life line. How the discourse about the "creative city" can be articulated as a contradictory relationship, is at the center of the performance of the interdisciplinary artist Tiff Massey, which she will redevelop for the festival. Baly Nguyen, the group SDW e.V. as well as the Kotti Shop traveled to Detroit in the run-up to the festival. Both at HAU3 and in an outdoor installation, material from their artist residences will be presented. With: Mike Banks (Underground Resistance), Lakuti (Uzuri), Mark Ernestus (Hard Wax), Adrian Tonon (City of Detroit), Yuko Asanuma, John E.
