Naarm-based DJ/artists DJ Sezzo and Makeda Zucco are interested in the history of experimental dance music as a basis for revolution. From techno to house, disco to garage, jungle to hip-hop, each genre began as a form of expression for the marginalised.
The club can be viewed as a type of social experiment – a Utopian testing ground for the celebration of individuality and togetherness in coexistence. Club dancing tends to be intuitive and spontaneous, and its appeal to the oppressed lies in its being socially created without reference to external authority. The sensory overload of the club environment forces a direct response to your surroundings and is a form of total bodily presence free of hermeneutic pressure.
Melbourne’s iconic Tote Hotel will be transformed into PRECOG, a dance party where invited artists combine electronic music, sound art, performance and installation, that foreground non-cognitive modes of understanding beyond Western coloniser logic.

An artist who by her very nature plays with the construct of what pop is, Klein’s neoteric vision has seen her quickly become one of the UK’s most intriguing and unpinnable producers and performers.

Angela Goh is an Australian dancer and choreographer whose work often deals with tropes of femininity; the supernatural; and dance as both a form and as a force. For PRECOG Angela will perform Predictable Dances - an ongoing project where for each performance she engages the services of a psychic to predict what will happen during the performance. Then she performs the prediction. It is very simple. There is nothing else to really understand about it other than that a dance is prophesized and that it comes true, and so it is just a dance that is meant to be.

Amrita Hepi is an award winning first nations choreographer and dancer from from Bundjulung (Aus) and Ngapuhi (NZ) territories. Her mission as an artist is to push the barriers of intersectionality and make work that garners multiple access points through allegories. Her practice at present is interested in probing ideas of authenticity, the perpetuation of culture, tradition, and a ‘decolonial imagination’ - and questioning where this now resides.

Bhenji Ra is a Sydney based interdisciplinary artist whose practice combines performance, dance and video. Her work is often concerned with the dissection of cultural theory, identity, and the social/political functions of dance. She is the co-founder of Club Ate, a celebration of queer Asia-Pacific diaspora, and is mother of the vogue House of Slé. Del Lumanta and Daryl Prondoso's musical projects span across DIY, punk, experimental and club worlds. They currently collaborate as Sex Havers DJs and Basic Human. Their separate projects include Gas, Video Ezy and Phone.
Their new work for Precog is an exploration of Filipino mythology and the modern diasporic experience through performance, primitive electronics and sampled traditional folk music.
Claudia Nicholson

Interdisciplinary artist Claudia Nicholson was born in Bogota, Colombia. Her work straddles and celebrates contrasting cultures, popular and ancient. After more than two decades of frenzied discourse around the concept of identity, Nicholson broaches the complexities with humour, resolve, and freshness. Her effort has not gone unnoticed, and she will be creating original projections for PRECOG’s walls.

Leila El Rayes is a Sydney-based artist of Egyptian and Palestinian descent. An affecting blend of punk culture and Arab aesthetics, her performance and sculpture work examines the idea of being dissolved into a predetermined culture, exploring and reacting to exoticistation and otherness. Poison is the collaborative project of Melbourne-based producers DJ Plead (BV) and T.Morimoto. Percussive and using the sounds of the Middle Eastern mijwiz and Japanese shakuhachi flute, the pair will be working their dance music into a DJ set for Leila’s performance.

Bobuq is a writer, artist and agitator of the Afghan diaspora. They co-edit Archer Magazine, founded the QTIPOC activist collective Colour Tongues and are a member of the performance collective, Embittered Swish (also performing at Next Wave Festival 2018). Their work is written, performed and exhibited in Melbourne as well as abroad. Bobuq will be giving a spoken performance that encapsulates concepts of community-building, agitation, and the intersections of queerness, transness and Islam.

‘J’OUVERT’ is a new collaborative work between Naarm-based artist Makeda, and the AM Trio - including dancer/artist Ece Yavuz, renowned Trinidad born steel-pan player Alvin Rostant and musician R. The performance explores the social legacies of Afro-indo Trinidad, and its unique relationship toward resistance with an ode to the country’s annual 3AM commemoration of slave abolition (where this work takes its namesake). ‘J’Ouvert’ unpacks several themes - including the tumultuous history of the steel-pan drum, the relationship between healing and embodiment, and Trinidad’s the theatre of the streets.
Hannah Brontë

Hannah Brontë is a DJ and interdisciplinary artist interested in the expected and changing roles of women today; her explorations of this are deeply influenced by hip-hop and female protest culture. Previous works have included deconstructed feminist banners, quoting female rappers and Brontë’s own words, as well as textiles. Hannah will be using oestrogen camouflage to adorn characters within new works for projection at PRECOG.

Brian Fuata is a Samoan-Australian artist known for his improvisational performances, made up movement, conversation, and text–often derived from emails and text messages. Fuata creates intimate narratives, with dead-pan humour he plays with the conventions of performance, responding to material, space, and environment. For PRECOG, Fuata will be in a new collaboration with electronic music producer, Enderie. Enderie has cut up language, conceptualised kinetic works and pumped big beats for Melbourne’s Liquid Architecture, Belgium’s Kraak and Sound In Motion, the Sydney Opera House, VIVID Live, Underbelly Festival, St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Next Wave Festival, and the Jogja National Museum. Enderie performs extensively across the Australian underground music circuit while working in the community radio sector.

Lucreccia Quintanilla (El Salvador/New York/Melbourne) is an artist, researcher, writer and is also known as DJ General Feelings. She is interested in the socio-political potential of working from the musical standpoint of the diaspora as an experimental site and this permeates all the streams through which she works. In recent years, she has constructed a soundsystem speaker stack in the Jamaican sound system style as a point of departure for thinking through cultural difference, collaboration, feminism, music/sound experimentation. Through her speakers, Lucreccia will be DJing a Reggetoneras Peleoneras set - meaning “angry women of reggaeton”. Their music deals with gender and sexuality politics, whereas for the men of reggaeton its still mostly all the usual hoes and slack talk.

Larrie is of Filipino-Australian heritage and widely regarded by DJs themselves as one of the best hip hop and dancehall DJs in Australia. Holding down the coveted 1-3am Saturday residency at Melbourne’s Laundry, she plays to huge POC audiences and has amassed a loyal local following with her unpretentious sense of fun, inclusivity, and brilliant technical talent. Matka is an Macedonian-Armenian-Australian DJ and staple of Sydney’s biggest events for the past four years. She’s played sold-out international supports along with club-scene mainstays, becoming known for her blend of rap and hip hop with bass music, world rhythms and thumping club tracks. In early 2015, she co-founded local club night and collective Honey, which champions the creativity of women by exclusively playing the music of female-identifying artists. In 2017 and 2018, she curated all-female-identifying performers at Secret Garden Festival, NSW.

Over the past two years she has developed her ear for electronic music as curator of club night, Club Lux, giving a platform to lesser known female and gender non-conforming artists.
