Heart Beat presents Sunil Sharpe // Earwiggle, Sheworks – IRL

  • ► INTRO:  Heart Beat’s September pick is non other than Irish techno tastemaker Sunil Sharpe. When he started in 2000, Dublin had a strong scene and quickly he came floating to the top. Now Sharpe is hot, his diary features regular dates at clubs such as Berghain Fabric and Tresor. And not only as a DJ but he is an acclaimed producer and label owner of Earwiggle amongst others and radio host too; working closely with the pinnacle of Techno producers like Blawan, Pariah, Karenn, and his latest project Tinfoil with Matt “Defekt” Flanagan. According to the Irishman Techno is all about loyalty. When you get in you can never go back. These words are close to our heart, Techno sometimes feels like a relationship. Something keeps drawing you to it which you can’t really explain. Words that Heart Beat founder Chris Wolter and Resident/ friend 1DAN will both right away confirm! ►NEWS: Sunil Sharpe and DeFeKT are putting out an album together as Tinfoil. On A Roll, a ten-track LP, is their first full-length as Tinfoil. It follows a steady stream of collaborative EPs that started in 2014, and like those records, it'll come via their self-titled label. The press release says the album features a "combined know-how of techno and electro," and that the tracks were sourced mostly from quick-and-dirty live jams. The record also features vocals from Sunil Sharpe. ►FULL BIO OF SUNIL SHARPE [aka SS // in groups TinFoil and AD\\SS] LABELOWNER of Earwiggle, On The Hoof and Regular/Resident DJ at Berghain / Tresor/ Boiler Room RECORDING ARTIST ON SheWorks, Black Sun Records, Rave Or Die, Trensmat, Mord, Inner Surface Music, Violet Poison and many more Sunil Sharpe is one of Europe's most renowned and well-loved techno DJs. Gaining an enviable reputation for his DJing in the early '00s, he was soon invited to play at Berlin's Tresor Club, marking the start of an intensive involvement in the techno scene. Sunil has played extensively around Europe at the likes of Berghain, Fabric, Concrete, Sub Club, Glastonbury Festival and much more. He was also DJ of choice on the first two Karenn European tours, the last of which was marked by his now classic Boiler Room set in London. Known primarily for his fast-moving, skilful style on the decks, Sunil's reputation as a producer of raw, individualistic techno, has grown in tandem with his reputation as a DJ. Sunil also recently setup On The Hoof, a label dedicated specifically to his own productions and collaborations with friends. Sunil makes up one half of Tinfoil alongside fellow Dublin-based producer DeFeKT. Initially forged as a studio partnership in 2014 (and more recently as a live show), the pair have since racked up an impressive catalogue of 12"s on their own self-titled label. Additionally, Sunil runs the wonderfully erratic Earwiggle imprint that has built a dedicated following, releasing new names and old heroes into the battlefield. Sunil's application to techno and the scene in general, pushes far beyond the standard DJ/producer mould. Enjoying a long stint in pirate radio from his early days of active DJing, Sunil joined national station RTÉ 2fm in 2007, where he has since offered up a monthly mix of new music. The show has also been characterized by in-depth interviews with the likes of Jeff Mills, Surgeon, Blawan and many others. Sunil has also devised a new format for playing/reviewing new music in "The Quarterly Crate". Now in its third year, the hugely informative video series supplies a special insight into his most recent vinyl acquisitions. ▬▬▬▬▬▬THE STARTERS, SIDE DISHES AND DESSERTS▬▬▬▬▬ ►1DAN After cutting his teeth on the Leeds techno scene back in the mid 90's, Dan moved to London and was enveloped by the deep sounds of the Heart & Soul parties, connections were made through the legendary record store Eukatech and soon Dan was playing at London’s finest underground parties. Fast forward; relocation to Brighton and the infamous free party scene with Positive Soundsystem and Warm System. After many years of honing his sound and learning the craft, his first release appeared in 2011 on respected UK underground deep house label; Atmospheric Existence Recordings. This was followed up by a rash of releases on the Maltese label Batti Batti with support from DJ's such as Jus-Ed, Huxley, Jay Tripwire, Fred P and many more. Aside from solo studio work, collaborations with Bittersuite's Jon 'Griffin' Gray have resulted in a clutch of releases under their Tales Ov Rossi guise, returning to Atmospheric Existence Recordings and with the latest release marking the launch of UK label DeepSystems. Close working relationships continued with 1DAN remixing the latest Bittersuite track, These Thoughts for UK based outfit Situationism, released at the tail end of 2017. When in the booth, 1DAN’s hybrid DJ style moves from blistering techno to obscure deep house, providing listeners with unique selections that challenge the mind and feet. ►CHRIS WOLTER hailing from Hanse city Rostock, with a very active scene, as we all have experienced these past years.
