  • The dark and sweaty room at Open Studios was practically made for the kind of aerodynamic techno that Detroit star Claude Young plays.
  • Claude Young (!K7, DJax-Up Beats // DETROIT) Todd Sines (ele_mental, planet e, Rawax, Yore // NYC) Miss Shelrawka (SEATTLE) The GOAT (Groundwerk, UNT Records // VAN) Visuals by Trilliam Gibson Proper is ecstatic to be able to bring the inimitable Claude Young and Todd Sines to Vancouver on the same bill, with support from Seattle powerhouse Miss Shelrawka. Claude Young's powers as a DJ are no joke. Since his early days twisting brains on dance floors with the classic 'Planet Earth' under the pseudonym Brother From Another Planet to his current fiery DJ sets, Claude is a top ranking DJ globally with a style uniquely his own, but bearing the stamp of his native Detroit. You may have heard your share of Detroit DJs over the years, but if you haven't heard Claude Young throw down... well, then... you might know half the story. He has done extensive remix work and produced records for some of the most respected names in the business across all musical genres including Inner City (Kevin Saunderson), Carl Craig, Jay Denham, 4Hero, Joey Beltram, Gary Numan, The Reese Project, and many more. As a DJ, he has compiled mix compilations for !K7 (Germany), Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) and Jeff Mills (Axis Records.) As a composer, his work has been featured on BBC Radio 4 (UK) and Sony PlayStation (Japan) and is included on Air Texture Volume 5 compiled by Jonah Sharp, AKA Spacetime Continuum, released in April of 2017. Todd Sines' environments; real and virtual, from the flat fields of Ohio to the concrete jungle of New Works, have served as inspiration for his unique, hybrid sound. His post punk, industrial, and hip-hop upbringings, filtered through an obsession with analogue and early digital technology, resulted in stripped down electronic funk; before minimal was mnml -- it was just effective. Through his techno band, Body Release, with key Ohio players Titonton Duvanté;, Charles Noel [Archetyp] and Mike Szewczyk, they dabbled in early rave sounds before embarking on their own paths. Todd's introduction in early 1993 to Detroit's Carl Craig and Daniel Bell resulted in seminal releases with Peacefrog, Planet E and 7th City. Catching the ear of Richie Hawtin, "boiling point;" was featured on his debut mix CD in 1995 on Mixmag. Soon after, releases on Andy Vaz's Background Records and Titonton's own Residual brought his sound to house and techno aficionados worldwide. Since his move to New York in 2003, he's worked with a variety of other artists, including !!!, Death in Vegas, Liquid Liquid's Sal Principato; he's remixed Alexander Robotnick, Paul Randolph, Robert Owens, Moonstarr, Adam Marshall, Lanoiraude and more. With his new material with Natacha Labelle on Frankie, he pushes the boundaries of house music, and with the resurrection of his .xtrak alias on YORE, his return to jackin' minimal funk reminds people of where it all started. Miss Shelrawka brings an East Coast energy and grittiness to her Techno and House mixes. Since relocating to Seattle in 2008 Miss Shelrawka has established herself as a strong force in the PNW techno scene. Her mixing is as clean as her track selection is nasty! She owns a unique style of techness by creating velvety blends of multi-genre sounds. Whether it be Techno, funky Minimal Techno, Tech House, or a House set -- no matter what, the bass-lines will be saturated! Rising local talent, The GOAT rounds out the lineup and will be setting the pace for the night. He's been making a name for himself in Vancouver's techno circles with releases on Groundwerk, UNT, and Substation, focusing on his percussion-heavy warehouse techno style which carries over to his DJ sets. A regular at Vancouver's after-hours powerhouse, Gorg-O-Mish, The GOAT has shared line ups with techno luminaries like DVS1, Chris Liebing, Dave Angel, and more.
