OKO Dj (Brothers From Different Mothers / Paris, France)
An active – or should that be hyperactive? – member of the
Lyon-based BFDM label, OKO dj has quickly caused a stir with
her eclectic sets that simultaneously hark back to the style of
the 1980s and look ahead to the sound of the 2080s. Marine,
as she is also known, is the head of the Parisian branch of Lyl
Radio and produces a monthly programme, Pu$$y Nightmare,
entirely dedicated to female artists. 2018 is already proving to
be her year; and we wouldn’t bet against it turning out to be
this multitalented artist’s decade.
Front de cadeaux (Roccodisco / Brussels-Belgium)
Modern-day heroes and flagbearers of the Sound of Belgium,
Front de Cadeaux have carved out a niche for themselves with
their typically ‘Brussels’ style of DJing, 33 RPM +8%, in which
they deliberately slow down high-tempo tracks to extract a
deeper and denser sound. Faithfully following in the traditions
of 1980s EBM and the coldwave scene that succeeded it, this
pair of forty-somethings may have been around the block once
or twice, but they continue to push their musical boundaries.
Underpinned by rumbling bass lines and punctuated by flourishes
of humour, their style is an irresistible cocktail of acid,
saturated dub and futuristic downtempo.
