DJ LAG (GQOMKING!, DURBAN SOUTH AFRICA) - DJ LAG aka THE UNDISPUTED KING OF GQOM will be touching down for the first time ever in Cleveland on his American tour to spread the wonderful rhythms and sounds of GQOM! throughout the states. GQOM is a style of house music that emerged a decade into the 21st century from the city of Durban in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The style features wavy and bass beats produced with software such as FL Studio, and has gained prominence in London, sharing a certain amount of musical and diasporic kinship with the adventurous rhythmic palettes and bass heavy soundsystem culture much of British dance music is known for. The word gqom, sometimes expressed as qgom, igqom, gqomu or variants thereof, derives from an onomatopoeic combination of click consonants from the Zulu & the Xhosa language that represents a hitting drum. The music itself has been distributed without any involvement from the music industry and has since gained worldwide prominence beyond Durban and London, with it's heavy, syncopated percussion and infectious polyrhythms winning over the bodies and minds of adventurous dancers everywhere. DJ LAG has come to prominence as one of gqom's top purveyors and innovators, taking the sounds of his native Durban to several different continents, and now to the American midwest for the first time! Come show him a warm welcome to Cleveland and America before he heads off to perform at the AFROPUNK and MUTEK festivals, along with dates spanning the globe! This is one of his only American tour dates, and we're lucky and honored to be able to host someone in Cleveland who's already on his way to being a true legend and inspiration as a DJ.
DJ HAMA (WCSB, CLEVELAND) - DJ HAMA is no stranger to the audiences of our fair city, throwing down sets ranging from 90s boom bap, 60s jazz, and a wide breadth of knowledge of the house music originating from his native South Africa. Since moving here and starting his weekly slot on WCSB, Hama has become known for his adventurous DJing, almanac knowledge of DJing, and always bringing good vibes and positive energies to the parties he throws down at. Come see him explore his vast repertoire of African dance music and try to keep from dancing with a smile on your face!
SHIRTLESS (BODIES UNITED IN LOVE + DANCE, CLEVELAND)
- Shirtless is a co-founder of BUILD (Bodies United In Love + Dance); a platform releasing music and throwing club nights in Columbus, OH. Shirtless is most well known for his brand of harsh Rap and RnB edits and remixes incorporating the vocals of artists like 21 Savage and Mila J with thrown and stuttering hats, tense synths, and movement filled textures. As a DJ, he has been a resident at BUILD since its inception in 2015 and the diversity of his sets will take you through pain to ecstasy. He and has contributed mixes to Mixmag, Stock71, and Asian Dope Boys and recently scored a performance by Tianzhuo Chen for Front Triennial.
ADAB أدب (HEAVEN IS IN YOU/IN TRAINING, CLEVELAND) - As half of Cleveland party Heaven is in You and an affiliate of In Training, adab puts heavy emphasis on translating the unifying elements between us through djing. Characterized often by their palette of sounds, they made a niche for themselves in Cleveland, Ohio spinning a variety of sounds and venues alike. Having started djing dance music, primarily, as a result of finding Cleveland's techno party In Training and being a non binary black youth raised across a few states in the Rustbelt (IL/MICH/OH), adab seeks to unabashedly open up new perspectives and dialogues for both themselves and others.
