Artwork by Paul Hempstead ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HYPNOSAURUS Hypnosaurus (a.k.a. Aivar Tõnso) is an important figure for the Estonian electronic music history: he is the originator of Estonian house and techno. Hypnosaurus formed more than 25 years ago, just after the Estonian Restoration of Independence in 1991. Inspired by Sonic Youth, Big Black, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, and the early Detroit techno, Tõnso started making music with almost no means. Being in a constant search for abrasive musical expression, he somehow got hold of an old Soviet synthesizer called Polivox. This barely controllable, beast of a machine became a pivotal part of Hypnosaurus’ sound. The earliest production was released on an LP called"1991-1992” on Porridge Bullet / Pudru Kuul. The album was amongst 100 Favourite Archival Releases on Boomkat and The Quietus Best Reissues in 2015. Hypnosaurus called it a day in 1995 and no new material has been released since. Now in the autumn of 2018, Hypnosaurus is coming back with a new EP on Porridge Bullet. The new production uses former motives in a new and abstract way which is perfect for the dance floor but distinctive from the current trends. https://soundcloud.com/porridge-bullet http://porridgebullet.com/pb011.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HAPE Taavi Tulev is an electronic music composer, a sound designer and a nature recorder whose work is inspired by even rhythms and repetitive patterns. For him, music is an instrument that helps to create a different way of thinking, lose track of time and bring the audience into a state of trance. Taavi has released several albums and created sound designs for many museums and exhibitions. Having an architectural background, he can easily perceive the roominess in sound and aims to make urban environments sound better. Tulev’s audio installation for a permanent exhibition called "Uurali Kaja" in the Estonian National Museum is known to be one of the largest in the world. However, this is just a fracture of the countless achievements by the artist. (More here: https://taavitulev.com/portfolio). "It is simple to lose yourself in Taavi's room-specific, nature-rich and electronic sound waves that allure, attract, break and surprise. It happens in depth and in glory, all at once and then solely. The combination of the love for electronic music and for nature comes through very thoughtfully and creatively.” Berit Kaschan HAPE (ACID) is Taavi Tulev’s latest project which portrays a fully improvised live techno set. HAPE takes listeners into the unknown territories where ancient rhythms meet mesmerizing atmospheric soundscapes. https://soundcloud.com/taavitulev https://taavitulev.bandcamp.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CHRONONAUTZ "It's fucked, sounds like LFO / KLF / RSPCA! Brutal!!!" - Regis on NOMENTS. Fusing improvisational chaos, serious technical chops, and an insatiable urge to create very strange sounds, Chrononautz is making some of the most exciting and original techno in 2015, though their unrestrained music goes far beyond mere functionalism. Grinding acidic gear and psychotropic madness; esoteric beastings and passages of serene calm; clam fisted grin smithery and off-kilter wreckage, the music made by Dom Clare and Leon Carey is the product of an endearing friendship and years spent agitating in the more obscure corners of the Leeds underground. Playing music together since 2000, they initially started to experiment with electronic sounds in the lauded Chops, a band who ably joined the dots between cranky lo-fi electronics and the open-ended spirit of free jazz. Splitting in 2010, the pair then briefly formed Runners before finding their true calling as Chrononautz. Self-released in 2014, their ‘Public Domain Fuckover Series #1-6’ was quickly picked up by the likes of fellow Leeds resident, ex Blackneck and all round mischievous techno impresario Bleaching Agent as well as Quietus editor John Doran. Drawing on a welter of influences and honing long improvisational sessions, the music contained on the series was an intense, often brutal, depth charge exploration into warped acidic crank. With most tracks hitting the 20-minute mark, their heady vision took hold in a pleasingly immersive fashion, and the series was eventually listed in The Quietus Albums of the Year 2014. 2015, however, is all about ‘Noments’; a record that truly captures the pairs musical essence. Stemming from a desire to start afresh after two years of near constant writing, improvising, and recording, ‘Noments' finds Chrononautz delivering their most compelling audio thus far, offering unexpected turns, twisted sound design and moments of rare esoteric beauty, as they explain: ‘‘We're both pretty intense characters. We have a clear vision of what we're trying to achieve, as well as being obsessive about it. For ‘Noments’, we buried ourselves deep in the studio which, by this point, was being regularly polluted by fumes from the car re-spray garage beneath us. Most of our improvisations were either floating off into the ether or really fucking angry, our heads pounding from the obnoxious poisons. We’re talking heavy duty shit - lead - floating into our lungs and fucking with our heads. It's hard to explain how it makes you feel; numb and greasy. It's not good for you, let's put it that way. That's where ‘Noments’ comes from.’’ ‘‘We knew we needed to stop our cycle of endless recording. Scrap everything and start fresh so we pressured ourselves. We wanted to make a statement that encapsulates everything we've done so far. It was recorded in two takes, from two different practices in the same week. No thought process, just take a deep breath before entering the fume-filled studio, trust our instincts, and try to remember to stop in time for it to fit on the side of a record. This is the culmination of 15 years of friendship; two obsessive brains unintentionally whacked out on lethal poisons, filtering all our influences and experiences, boiled down to the thrill of having nothing planned. It's hard to convey just how much this record means to us, it's the cleaning of the slate.’’ [Words by Harry Sword, The Quietus] https://chrononautz.bandcamp.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DJ Ilmajaam Behind the solely Estonian name stands a one-man effort to spread interesting and hard to find sounds by presenting them from vinyl records and forming into one continuous journey. DJ Ilmajaam (Viktor Vinogradov) was born in Tallinn to a Russian family of engineers at the beginning of the 80's. Viktor’s fascination for vinyl started at an early age when every household typically had a record player and a collection of Melodiya. Viktor began his musical explorations with instrumental classical music (P. Mauriat, P. Tchaikovsky) and Electronic Space Rock band called Zodiac. Later o his interest manifested in more conscious search in music and he started to participate in various music-related projects with like-minded people. Since 2000 Viktor has contributed to the Estonian electronic music scene and organized various events of different sizes: Tunnel, KRILL, Kodu Tunne and collaborations with Hea Uus Heli curated by Aivar Tõnso and Plektrum with Jaagup Jalakas). Due to his devotion to the music scene, he has become a resident of internationally acclaimed festival Freerotation which happens annually in Wales. “DJ Ilmajaam’s sets are like a surreal Chirico's painting “The Seer” where lonely mannequin figure sits under the transcendental light.” (Secret Thirteen) https://soundcloud.com/krill https://secretthirteen.org/secret-thirteen-mix-017-dj-ilmajaam/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DJ %username% b2b LSD-Licious Lsd-licious and Dj %username% have been collaborating since the beginning of Tunnel Vision, as residents with is dead and playing b2b sets in the comfort of the studio.
