CSR & DBS Pres. Bjørn Torske

  • After years in the works Centre Source Records and Death Before Silence are proud to present the rousing Bjørn Torske (Smalltown Supersound / Sex Tags / Norway) for his Brisbane debut in a new BYO warehouse space. Annie, Todd Terje, Lindstrøm, DJ Fett Burger, DJ Sottofett and Prins Thomas might be the names that have helped make the world so well acquainted with Norwegian dance music, but how they came to sit at the top of the table owes much to Bjørn Torske. Bjørn Torske started experimenting with electronic music in the late ‘80s in his hometown of Tromsø. As a teenager he was inspired by other Tromsø musicians, especially Gier Jenssen, the musical prodigy later to be known as ambient pioneer Biosphere. Torske started releasing minimalist techno in the beginning of the ‘90s, primarily under the name of Ismistik. By the middle of the decade he had released a dozen 12” singles on different labels such as DjaxUpBeats and Reinforced Records, working under the Ismistik moniker as well as other names such as Krisp, for flirtatious disco-house productions, or Alegria, for his trance-centered tracks. By then he was already considered a Norwegian techno & house pioneer; however, his big breakthrough as a producer came when he released his Nedi Myra LP on Ferox in 1998. Nedi Myra was highly appreciated by house lovers as well as dance music press. By the release of Nedi Myra, Torske was also a member of Drum Island, a group that later transformed into the much more famous duo Röyksopp. Torske eventually moved to Bergen, Norway, but continued to travel all over the world, becoming a world class DJ. Since, he has released the acclaimed LP, Trøbbel (Tellé Records) in 2001 and returned with his most experimental release to date, the Feil Knapp LP (Smalltown Supersound) in the spring of 2007. The sound on Feil Knapp (Norwegian for “Wrong Button”) was inspired by everything from techno to dub, alternative pop, and leftfield electronica. The relatively loose Kokning, released in 2010, placed an emphasis on analog gear. His most recent release to date, Byen (Smalltown Supersound), released last year, revisits the space-disco tinged sound that made him one of Norway’s original house innovators. Joining Torske are Brisbane main-stay Matt Treffene of BTHC fame, bona fide dance-floor enthusiast Yikes, for his CSR & DBS debuts, as well as CSR & DBS Deejays. All hail the Codfather!
