Morphosis has been on the musical scene since 1990 selecting and playing music in clubs and on radio since the age of 14. In 1996 he moved to Italy and had the chance to improve his studio production skills. After many releases under other aliases, he started his own imprint Morphine Records in 2005, releasing the first ep on it, “Hunting”.
He is a lone voice in electronic music. Few people thread as challenging and intriguing live shows as him, where dark wave, krautrock, post everything and techno all sit together in haunted hardware harmony. His own Morphine label is just as sonically unpredictable, so too his own cultured remixes or stunning long players such as the immediately timeless and standout ouvre that was 'What We Have Learned'. Unfamiliar and unmissable, his productions sound as live and alive as anything he does in the club, truly making him in a class of one.
2011's What Have We Learned was an entry point for many listeners, but there's always been much more to Beaini than improvised techno. His upbringing in Lebanon set off a passion for music that crosses borders, be they stylistic, cultural or geographical.
His idea has been to "free" his techno tracks, creating a framework and then letting loose with raw, improvised electronics. It was in this spirit that he recorded his excellent album for Delsin, What Have We Learned, alongside 12-inches for labels like Honest Jons, M>O>S Recordings and his own Morphine Records, the label that for the last ten years has been a platform for Beaini's roaming ear.
Releases from artists like Hieroglyphic Being, Madteo, Container and Metasplice have aligned with Beaini's uncompromising attitude, and in 2013 he struck gold with a series of retrospective records that featured the work of Charles Cohen, an overlooked force in modular synthesis.
Rabih has a multi-pronged collaboration with Donato Dozzy. Contemporary art fiends may have been the first to catch wind that the two were teaming up: they have an audio installation in the Venice Biennial. While working on that project, the pair had the idea to keep the collaboration going, bringing it into a context that may be more familiar to their regular fans, playing a series of back-to-back DJ gigs under the name Dozzy/Beaini in Amsterdam and Paris and London's fabric.
Beaini helped curate CTM festival which has "new geographies" theme rang true with his perspective, and led to a relationship with celebrated film maker Vincent Moon—they now perform together as an audio-visual duo. But despite his experimental leanings, Beaini's heart is still in the dance, as he told Mark Smith in this recent conversation in Berlin. He's repeatedly invited at many well known festivals like CTM festival, Unsound, Dekmantel Selectors, Red Bull Music Festival, Organik festival...
