Atlantic Canada’s annual festival of free ideas in music and sound returns for a 12th instalment May 30th - June 2nd, 2019. Amplifying artists and sparking curiosity across genres, mediums and identities, OBEY creates a four-day narrative of radical sounding, a forward-thinking festival like no other. The programme leads audiences into alternative and historic spaces throughout the small coastal city of K’jipuktuk / Halifax. At each locale, the space is filled, new sonics unfurl and emergent ideas crystalize.
This year’s festival will include Philly’s post-bounce clubshaker DJ Haram, French Japanese hydro-conceptualist Tomoko Sauvage, PAN’s contrarian collagist Eartheater, legendary Australian shattered glass blower Justice Yeldham, trans Algonquin pop auteur Mich Cota, bitchpunk sound theorist Debby Friday, elastic post-boppers The Brodie West Quintet, Toronto’s astral-classic beat chemist Korea Town Acid, The Canadian premier of NYC’s piano-bending mystic Kelly Moran, junked trance duo 75 Dollar Bill, brutal UK rainbow rockers Guttersnipe, Toronto’s rising club punks Just John x Dom Dias, and veteran composer Mary Jane Leach's ethereal take on NYC downtown aesthetics. Vital White Mountain Apache violinist Laura Ortman is joining too, alongside Finnish-born Glaswegian dream-weaver Cucina Povera, chill-soul triple-threat Strange Froots, power-vocalist Soeur Acéphale, and Montreal bodygoths Dregqueen and more!
