Sunday 5th of May sees us team up with local collective Handpicked to bring you one of the greatest hip hop figures of all time… Grammy-winning producer / DJ / Artist / Actor, PETE ROCK!
Pete Rock’s career spans over 20 years, 11 albums, 25 million+ in album sales. His tracks reach 7-digit streaming numbers, complimented by countless production nominations including the Grammy winner for Rap Album of The Year, Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.” He’s continuously mentioned alongside DJ Premier, RZA and the late great J Dilla as a mainstay of 90s East Coast productions.
But it doesn’t stop there. Whether it be producing Hip Hop and RnB classics for the likes of The Notorious B.I.G, Public Enemy, Nas, Run DMC, Mary J. Blige and TLC, Pop icons such as Madonna and Lady Gaga or Jazz legend Robert Glasper - Pete Rock has areas covered, always setting new standards in the process.
Pete Rock’s latest album “Return of the SP1200” takes us back to the origins of hip hop, “art, culture and soul” - tapping into the heart of the community through live instrumentation and composition, and of course paying homage to the unforgettable sampler that shaped the sound of hiphop forever. Of course, large in part to those such as Rock that mastered it’s early interface and made the machine their own.
He’ll be joined on the evening by a live beat / DJ set from legends of Scotland’s East Coast scene, Jazz Spastiks (complete with Akai MPC!) and Handpicked head honcho, Tuner.
