  • DJ T is Thomas Koch. But to most he’s simply known as T. With over 25 years experience in electronic music, Koch’s been going at this music malarky for a while, since the late ‘80s and early ‘90s in fact. The mad, bad world of Koch includes promoting, event organising, producing, editing the now defunct magazine Groove, and is also a founding members of Berlin powerhouse Get Physical Records, along with M.A.N.D.Y duo and the lads from Booka Shade. Aged nine was when Koch fell in love with wax. Born in ’69 in Dusseldorf, Germany, his early disco influences soon grew past the Village People and Evelyn Thomas as he discovered early rap music and the tones of Grandmaster Flash. Come 1983 and he was getting down with Afrika Bambaata and early electro. The German had a penchant for funk, beats, bass and a dash of glam – all raw ingredients for the start of a new dance culture. His career commenced in earnest in 1986 when he played at a few private parties. Professional gigs soon followed in and around Frankfurt as he started to put on his own events. His early sets consisted of black music in its many deviations but by the late ‘80s the acid house revolution was gaining momentum and Koch was caught up in the sonic stampede. By ’88 he switched beats to play acid and early house. He played the majority of ‘big’ clubs around Frankfurt, continuing the trend throughout the ‘90s. Towards the end of the millennium, and after a decade of putting on major events, festivals and club nights, he ventured into the unknown. Koch had a vision that refused to subside: he wanted a club of his own. So in 1999 he teamed up with a few like-minded souls to open his own venue in the heart of Frankfurt. Needles to say Koch played a crucial part in steering the music policy and shaping the high-profile performers. Steve Bug, DJ Hell, Ricardo Villalobos and Tiefschwarz were among the venue’s frequent guests. In the early naughties he moved to Berlin and in 2002 Koch and friends started the now hugely respected Get Physical label. It took a mere ten (single) releases for the label to gain the hugely impressive reputation it now has. Besides all of this activity, Koch still found time to pursue his own artistic desires. In early 2000, and alongside Monsterbaze, he released his inaugural production. Thus far he’s released around 16 singles on Get Physical, not including releases on 20:20 Vision and Pokerflat. Another milestone occurred in 2005 as Koch unleashed his first artist album, 'Boogie Playground' featuring the dope 'Freemind' track. The album summed up everything that is Koch, as it played reference to his first and past influences of club music that ranged from classic funk and electro to acid house. This year DJ T paired up with Thomas Schumacher to produce the highly anticipated second studio album 'The Inner Jukebox' which saw a return to the Detroit dimension with it's Benelux house track 'Shine On'. Straight off the back of a Latin American tour, Australia can soon see the uber cool and groove-addicted club nut DJ T in December.
