In celebration of World Pride Day, Industry of Machines is proud to return to full action after a flurry of activity in various forms over previous months in the trenches of New York. Special occasion that it is, we're welcoming a diverse cast of friends old and new for a two-floor blowout with different atmospheres in different areas for the enjoyment of all. Upstairs, Donny Burlin & DJ Econ, well-known figures in Brooklyn's queer and afterhours scene, DJ, curate, and pay tribute on a floor devoted to the history and sounds of NYC queer nightlife from the '70s onward. Downstairs we welcome all for dungeon tactics with live and DJ sets encompassing the harder, darker strains of techno, industrial music, acid, and more.
Juanpablo is the head of Frigio Records in Madrid, a long-running leftfield affair that concerns itself with many of the same interests as IofM: brutal acid, harsh techno, coldwave and minimal synth, and industrial music from the late '70s onwards. We've had him before for a memorable party at Bossa Nova Civic Club with Santiago Salazar and Cienfuegos, so now that's he's returning to North America for gigs in Mexico and at The Black Lodge in LA, it only made sense to welcome him back for another set as excellent as the first. Like his productions, JuanPablo's sets are diverse, dark, and experimental, flowing across the spectrum of harsher dance sounds into something that is greater than the sum of its parts, at times reminiscent of masters like Traxx, Mick Wills, or Silent Servant in their ability to fold together historical and newer sounds into a powerful whole.
The head of the Through Greater Evil label who is also associated with the well-regarded RS94109 record shop in San Francisco, Skander is a producer and DJ who also skirts the edges of several genres, in his case techno, industrial, noise, and experimental electronics. Longtime record pushers are often some of the best DJs around, being steeped in the trade and able to command a far broader knowledge than most DJs based on the amount of material passing through their hands. Examples abound: Michael Serafini in Chicago, Mike Huckaby in Detroit, Substance in Berlin, Antal from Rush Hour, Serge from Clone Records, and so forth. Skander's discography also includes entries on LA Club Resource and Endangered Species, and we're confident he's the right man to close the night for this event.
There are quite a few notable women in Brooklyn's techno scene, but Motiv-A stands out for her unflagging dedication to austere, hard techno sounds, something that immediately grabbed our attention when she debuted a few years ago. Puristic techno in its true form is actually quite a rare find and can be traced along a narrow lineage that includes the likes Mills, Vainio, Oscar Mulero, Surgeon, Function, Regis, Sleeparchive, and a few others, with some expansion in recent years as it returned to vogue. IofM has been fans of her sound since the beginning, so we're happy to welcome her for a rare live set.
Dan Snazelle is known to greater renown for Snazzy FX, an idiosyncratic line of synthesizer modules and pedals designed for exploratory electronic producers. His music matches the profile of the devices he makes, with a firm Midwestern techno backbone subjected to experimental twists and turns that take it into quite unusual places but keep the groove and impact intact. A more recent entry into Brooklyn's techno melee, he's released on Jacktone and has a collaboration with Nina Kraviz on her трип label, as well as a forthcoming 12 on BPMF's long-running Philly-based Schmer Records, which should give some idea of his pedigree when he appears for us for a live PA.
Donny Burlin is locally best known as the manager of Space is the Place, the notorious afterhours loft that has contributed greatly to Brooklyn's dancefloor renaissance. A longtime DJ, designer, head and producer originally from Baltimore who was central to that scene in his time there, he's another DJ with an impressive collection and breadth of style, whose immersion in the house scene and in old-school gay clubs brings authenticity to his sound.
DJ Econ originally hails from the West Coast, with a valuable 1999 release to his name under the alias Manni Gaime, recently reissued on his revived Public Works imprint; an excellent brand new edits EP followed it just weeks ago. Well-loved in New York's queer scene where he has a significant history as a promoter and DJ, he's also a digger par excellence, one of the few who can stay neck and neck with the best when format goes out the window and true skills are necessary to bring different genres and grooves together.
