RECLOOSE (DETROIT) (PEACEFROG) In spring 1997, Matthew Chicoine, aka Recloose made contact with techno pioneer Carl Craig, by way of a now legendary ‘demo on rye’ sandwich. This tired story has been referenced to death, and we’d all prefer not to revisit the details. Instead, let’s focus on what it led to- the near immediate signing of Recloose to Planet E and the beginning of a promising musical career for one very talented individual. Recloose’s musical roots trace back to eight years of studying music and playing jazz saxophone, later shifting his focus to the art of mixing, cutting and dicing vinyl whilst at college in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His eclectic DJ sets, which were first heard on college radio, have led Recloose to become an in-demand DJ, playing at clubs and festivals around the world. Having spent time performing as a turntablist for both Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra, and the more esoteric Uri Caine ensemble, Recloose’s musical activities have always been remarkably diverse. This sonic liberalism, and ensuing trans-global travel, have provided Recloose with an impeccable musical palette to work from. Since the fateful meeting with Carl Craig, Recloose has developed into a true standout of Detroit’s musical litter. The past 6 years have seen a number of groundbreaking 12”s released, a mix CD for Belgian label Eskimo, and a host of remixes for the likes of Herbert, Tei Towa, MJ Cole and Clara Hill. Recloose, consistently gathering musical momentum, released his debut album ‘Cardiology’ on Planet E / !K7 in 2002, to large critical acclaim. On a trip to Wellington, New Zealand in 2000, where he performed as part of the city’s international jazz festival, Recloose fell in love with the people, and country itself, and following the release of Cardiology, embarked on the lengthy process of relocating himself and studio to the Kapiti Coast. Summer 2004, saw the return of Recloose, turning an electrifying performance at the Movement festival in Detroit. Fans and media alike indulged in a rare and very special treat, the new sound of Recloose, (that is likely to dominate his second album ‘Hiatus On The Horizon’). Currently Recloose resides in the fertile pastures of New Zealand. The burgeoning musical scene of Wellington has offered fresh inspiration to a mind already brimming with talent. JULIEN DYNE (NEW ZEALAND) (bbe/wonderful noise) Launching his brand new album on BBE RECORDS 'pins and digits' Julien Dyne is a multi-talented artist – a top New Zealand drummer, producer and visual artist. Best known for his work as the drummer for Opensouls and Tyra and the Tornadoes, Julien has also worked with the likes of Verse Two, Nathan Haines, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Ladi6. Since his selection for the Red Bull Music Academy in Rome in 2004 Julien has been working with international artists and forging his own unique sound as a producer. Julien spent two weeks in Cologne in 2007 where he recorded, collaborated and co-produced with legendary musicians and producers including the Mizell brothers (Motown/ Jackson 5, Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey), Om'mas Keith (Sa- Ra), Steve Spacek, Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313), Andreya Triana, Black Spade , Theo Parrish , Roman Rosic, Skymark and Sophie Loizou. Pins and Digits is Julien’s long awaited debut album, following the critical acclaim of his first release Phantom Limbo EP (2007). Phantom Limbo EP introduced Julien as a producer and served as a platform for him to showcase his sizable percussion and production skills – he expertly moulds together produced beats and live instrumentation to create a sound which encompasses hip hop and funk, afrobeat and jazz. The Sunday Star Times described the EP as “the most convincing local hybrid of jazz, funk and hip-hop I’ve heard in a very long time.” Lead single 'Maddingos' was nominated for a bnet award 2007, and remains a local anthem for DJs. Pins and Digits features guests spots from some of New Zealand’s most talented musicians including Jonathan Crayford, Paul Dyne, Lewis McCallum, Jeremy Toy (opensouls), John Bell, Isaac Aesili, Steph Brown and stand out tracks from the fresh vocal talents of Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle) and Parks (Ladi6). Stylistically Pins and Digits combines the big bass, brass and beats aesthetic of the Phantom Limbo EP with futuristic keyboards and synthesised sounds. + VERY SPECIAL GUESTS DJ CODE 1 (LONDON/ADELAIDE) + DJ dL (ADELAIDE) AND LOCALS INKSWEL AND RAMBL!! $15 ENTRY.
