Vladimir Ivkovic, one of the prime selectors from the European scene and resident of Dusseldorf based club Salon Des Amateurs, will perform on 31 August as part of RED BULL MUSIC FESTIVAL MOSCOW 2019.
The word selector used in electronic music originated in Jamaica. It was used for those who played their selection of vinyl records on the famous mobile soundsystems at parties that became the prototype for all future legal, and not-so- legal, raves. In our times, the word is used to label a certain type of DJs who treat their profession as an art form, opening the audiences to new musical worlds and providing food for thought, while still keeping the crowds grooving.
The musical history of Vladimir Ivkovic begins in his native town of Belgrade at a party in the mid 80s, when all of 11 years old, he put on Prince’s song “When The Doves Cry” at a party. He organized his first parties in 1994 that set the tone for his later professional career. In fact, they were not parties in the strict sense of the word, more like having a merry time through the night with friends, while putting on their favorite music at the restaurant Sara that was owned by his father. With time, Ivkovic noticed that more and more people came to these casual gatherings. When the visitors started bringing tapes and vinyl, he realized that amidst the chaos and not- so-favorable conditions in Belgrade in the 90s, he had somehow been able to form a secret haven, where its visitors found their faith in freedom, brotherhood, love and hope revived through music. Upon moving to Germany, Ivkovic became a resident of clubs Essen and Duisburg, before he finally found the ideal spot for himself in Dusseldorf – Salon Des Amateurs. It was aquite unusual club in Germany, where one could hear the strangest of tunes not very amenable to dancing, from krautrock to free jazz. Salon Des Amateurs was founded in 2004 by artist-musician Detlef Weinrich, one of the members of the significant post-krautrock band Kreidler who also produced brutal techno under the moniker of Toulouse Low Trax. The Dusseldorf club was a hotspot for DJs who did not believe in pleasing the crowds with known hits, but rather in sharing tunes as if passing on some secret knowledge. The walls of the salon became a second home for him, as he started playing long sets stretching over several hours on Saturdays, sharing the decks with Detlef Weinrich. These days, with Salon Des Amateurs having closed down, Vladimir Ivkovic tours around the world with bag loads of rare, precious music, and on the last day of summer season will arrive in Moscow. Ilya Smirnov and Sergey Krylov, veteran selectors of the Moscow scene, will provide the supporting acts.
