  • Laurel Halo's sharp ear for unique sound design and non-linear electronic music is reflected in this presciently curated lineup. Matching Rashad Becker with FunkinEven, Parris, DEBONAIR and DJ Bone with an ambient set from Laurel herself, this looks set to be a musically inspirational night.
  • MODE 2019 Curated by Laurel Halo 7.30pm - 3am Rashad Becker (live) / group A x Kat Day present, Formwork (live a/v) / Laurel Halo (ambient DJ) / DEBONAIR / Parris / Steven Julien aka Funkineven / DJ BONE (Subject Detroit) / RASHAD BECKER Rashad Becker is a composer and musician residing in Berlin. His compositions are multilayered narratives populated by an ensemble of sonic entities, some smug, some shy, some agitators, others ready to surrender. Often there’s a tragic-comical touch, like a cartoon version of what could be a requiem from a dream (or just as much a fertility dance from another dimension). GROUP A Modernist architecture enthusiasts group A and Kat Day of The KVB team up to explore the relationship and analogy between sound, visual and architecture group A seeks to translate the structural elements of architecture such as rhythm, texture, harmony, proportion and dynamics into sounds. By experimenting on found sound at construction sites and inside or surrounding of modernist architectures, group A will aim to create synthetic rhythms and soundscape inspired by the structures, psychological impact and theories of modernist architecture. In response to group A’s music, Kat attempts to integrate a collection of group A’s photography works of modernist architecture with her 3D digital renders, which will be processed via analogue video machines to create living fragmentations of concrete constructions. The video will be manipulated live in response to the sound - a feedback loop of architectural distortions. LAUREL HALO (Ambient DJ) Heavy strains of electronic music are at the core of Laurel Halo's work, which ranges from live performance and DJing, to composing albums and scoring work. Since her debut album Quarantine came out in 2012 on the London label Hyperdub, Halo has made a name for herself by bucking sonic traditions and embracing vulnerable approaches to writing and production. She has released albums on Hyperdub, Honest Jon’s and Latency, maintaining her core aesthetic across a stylistically diverse output ranging from pop to ambient, to leftfield club and experimental electronica. PARRIS Having become known for his ghostly, rhythmically elusive representations of UK techno and bass music, London-based producer and DJ Parris now finds himself on the crest of the wave of adventurous UK producers bringing a fresh futuristic bounce and sonic adventure to the 4/4 template. The spectral low-end drift of Parris's music allows him to work the periphery of conventional club expectations, his DJ sets twitching with erratic psychedelic energy while rattling the cage exactly when they need to, as fierce recent sessions for Batu's Timedance party (alongside Laurel Halo), De School in Amsterdam and Livity Sound would attest. DEBONAIR DEBONAIR is a London based DJ and NTS Radio resident who has cemented her reputation as one of the city's leading selectors. She's honed a unique sound which blends a broad spectrum of fringe music, including noise, avant-garde electronics, body music, Chicago house, new-wave, industrial and shoegaze and can playfully finesse this sound to throwdown in any environment. STEVEN JULIEN aka FUNKINEVEN Funkineven (Steven Julien) is no stranger to groove. Over the past few years, the London native has grown to become one of the UK's finest electronic musicians; a skilled and soulful technician whether perched behind a pair of decks or a sequencer. Steven released his debut EP with Eglo Records back in 2009, which ushered in a more mature chapter. Two years later, he founded Apron Records; an incubator for music-makers putting together honest electronic music like Greg Beato and Shanti Celeste. DJ BONE (Subject Detroit) To some he is the champion of the underground. Others see him for the first time and ask the person dancing like crazy next to them, "Where did THIS guy come from?" Think of Detroit Techno and DJ Bone might not be high on your list of luminaries because he is 100% independent and does things on his terms and on his terms only. He won't tap dance or bend to fit the "popular" dj mold. Those who recognize Bone know him for his uncompromising and innovative ways. It's no accident that two letters always precede Bone's name whenever he's on the bill. First and foremost, Bone is a DJ---in the truest sense. When he spins, it's as if the turntables and the mixer become a physical extension of his body. He employs every possible technique in the disc jockey arsenal masterfully: blending, scratching, back spinning, no monitors or headphones; unrivaled in his use of the fader switch and he incorporates them all into every set. From his standing room only residency performances to after-hours spots, he rocks every show as if it's his last. What the general public and far too many DJs don't realize is that Bone spins as much for his own enjoyment as he does for the audience. It's a compulsion that only those who live for what they do possess and those who don't can never understand: Bone lives to spin - it's a necessary part of his existence. His dedication to the art of dance music and DJing is so untainted and intense that the tales of his confrontational encounters with flashy booking agents and "big name" djs are already the stuff of legend. No hype or trends, just a relentless drive and passion to take the party to another level. That's why he's one of the few spin masters other DJs hate to follow. DJ Bone describes himself as "an uncompromising, hype hating, 100% independent, real Detroit native come auditory striker and soul controller that cannot be bought".
