  • SPEAK NO EVIL is the new Leeds jazz night at Assembly House that aims to bridge the gap between the big band stands and talc covered dance floors from around the world. The goal is to show that electronic dance music and improvised music are not so far apart and DJs and live acts from across the country will be fusing their fiercest collections of dance-floor fillers to create a space of jazz influenced free spirited movement. Don’t worry if you’re not a die hard jazz head, this ain’t no La La Land affair. So put away your foxtrot and pack your skanks because for our first edition we’re delighted to welcome a lineup of some of the most stellar acts from around the UK: Alex Rita & Errol (Touching Bass) ------- For their Leeds debut it is our absolute pleasure to welcome two of our all-time favourite selectors, Alex Rita & Errol. The UK’s answer to The Soulquarians, they are the brains behind Touching Bass, the ‘Movement of Soul-Led Disciples’ that do the doo better than anyone else. A staple in the South London jazz community, they hold down a fantastic bi-weekly broadcast on NTS Radio leading ‘voyages into inner-city concrete jungle productions plus astral-facing funk, jazz, broken beat and anything else with a soulful pulse’, ‘Speaking in Sound’, a regular discussion series at Brilliant Corners and a monthly dance that’s communicated via text. Touching Bass are known for cultivating a space for musical exploration where emphasis is firmly placed on dance and community above all, a space unbounded by genre and lead by feeling instead. Having seen them perform at various spots around London and at their We Out Here Festival stage takeover, they have continually amazed us with their selections and we’re ecstatic to see what journey they’ll take us on. https://www.nts.live/shows/touching-bass Vipertime ------- Born out of the snake-pit of Leeds house parties, Vipertime are a heavy, energetic quartet that draw influence from everything from the spiritual harmonies of Sun-Ra to the Post-Punk grunginess of 23 Skidoo. These influences manifest themselves in a concoction of squealing sax, gnarly basslines and dual drummer madness which is guaranteed to create potent improvised music for the dancefloor. They’ll be unleashing a live set well into the night. https://vipertime.bandcamp.com/ Universal Sanctuary ------- Also joining the party from the Big Smoke is Charles Vaughan, a ‘South London Neo-Jazz Dudester of many cowboy hats’. Having cut his teeth working at WIRED RADIO and acting as label assistant at world renowned On the Corner Records, Charles has recently started on his next venture. ‘Universal Sanctuary’ is a new nugget of radio ear-candy on Worldwide FM partnered with breakfast show host and jazz aficionado Tina Edwards, broadcasting the intersections of jazz, DJ culture and DIY movements from across the world. “Dance can be triggered by improvised Jazz, classic four to the floor or whatever it is that moves our souls; Universal Sanctuary is the junction between live Jazz, electronic music and DJ culture; a place that warmly invites you to lose your inhibitions and open your ears even wider. With a new live Worldwide FM show from November, Tina Edwards and Charles Vaughan will be bringing their eclectic jazz infused vibrations to the dancefloor for the very first time. Join US.” https://www.mixcloud.com/CharlesVaughan/art-of-the-mixtape-a-progression-in-jazz/ Minus Kendal b2b Bobbi Hoffman ------- Minus Kendal is a DJ, radio presenter and crate-digger who gained much of his knowledge working behind the counter at London institution Flashback Records. His monthly NTS Radio show, ‘Party Socks’ sees him flit between jazz and dub, electro and booty house, post-punk and krautrock and almost everything else on the musical map. Elsewhere, Minus holds a weekend residency at London audiophile spot Spiritland as well as playing out as a member of the prestigious Dimensions Festival DJ Directory. https://www.nts.live/shows/party-socks Bobbi Hoffman After a summer of living la vida loca, Bobby Hoffman is back in Leeds to dish out the deep digs that the people are demanding. Predating disco, Bobby cut his teeth in the streets of Fallowfield, where his love for LOVE held no bounds. After putting Manny on the map, he migrated eastwards, conquering dancefloor dungeons along the way until he arrived in sunny Leeds. This is where we find him today. You can expect a plethora of international bangers, the result of excavating crates on the sun-kissed shores of Brazil (thanks to his sets with Brazilian Wax) to the talc-covered floors of Wigan Casino. He’ll be giving it, hard. Spaghetti Baby ------- Spaghetti Baby is the brain child of Freya Smith and Robbie McGrial. Selectors extraordinaire, they established themselves on the Leeds pub quiz circuit before perfecting their craft in establishments across Leeds, whilst also soaking in the stacks of music stored in the university’s music library. Their hours of crate digging and library listening means that they are certain to cook up something special to start the night.
