  • Five Bristolian institutions club together for four days of adventurous concerts, club nights and plenty more besides.
  • Returning for its fourth edition, from 23-26 April 2020 Bristol New Music proposes an adventurous exploration of the city through sound, with artists from across the radius of contemporary music gathering for four days of newly commissioned works, sonic responses to rarely used spaces, landmark concert hall programmes, club nights, gallery exhibitions and film programmes. Among the first names announced for the 2020 festival are the legendary Japanese percussionist and composer Midori Takada; a rare UK performance by Norwegian electronic musician Deathprod presenting his visceral and politically charged new album ‘Occulting Disk’; Irish artist Áine O'Dwyer presenting a bold new commission that captures the song and instrumentation of time, place and people in Bristol suburbia; maverick UK producer and conceptualist Klein; Swedish composer Ellen Arkbro performing her church organ piece ‘Chordalities’ for the first time; Legendary American composer Alvin Curran performing a concert-installation for large numbers of mobile musicians; boundary-pushing new music groups Hezarfen Ensemble, with its unique programme of seven commissions for transcultural ensemble by top young Turkish composers, and Ligeti Quartet playing microtonal composer Georg Friedrich Haas’ third string quartet 'In iij Noct' in pitch darkness; pioneering American computer music performer Carl Stone; London improvising duo GUO presenting ‘GYOTU’, an audiovisual work made in collaboration with US filmmaker Brady Corbet, and Bristol feminist interdisciplinary ensemble Viridian Ensemble. More performances, commissions, exhibitions and workshops to be announced early in the new year. Taking place biennially across Bristol, Bristol New Music is a collaboration between five key organisations in the city: Colston Hall, Arnolfini, Spike Island, St George’s Bristol and the University of Bristol. The 2020 edition is produced by Qu Junktions.
