Algorithmic Art Assembly, now in it's second year, brings together pioneers in art, technology, and culture for a multi-day conference and music festival in the heart of the Bay Area on March 27 – 29. The event is organized by computer music collective Highpoint Lowlife with Gray Area, supporting the nonprofit’s mission of redefining the role of art and culture in the epicenter of technology innovation.
Set in the San Francisco Bay Area, the festival celebrates the power of algorithms as a creative process for culture. More commonly known for functional uses such as curating music recommendations to targeted advertisements, algorithms have come to shape the contemporary digital landscape. The festival framework elevates the creative potential of algorithmic processes by showcasing the working practices of artists through daytime talks, evening performances, and two creative code workshops.
Daytime talks feature a mix of local and international, emerging and established artists across a number of fields from machine learning, film making, script writing, data sonification, granular synthesis, 3D animation, and video game design, showcasing the potential for algorithmic processes in art, music, and media.
Evening audiovisual performances, which are heavily influenced by the Algorave scene, showcase energetic musical performances with dynamic visuals, accompanied by the performing artists projecting a livestream of their code on screen. By making visible the artist’s creative process, the performances echo the ethos of open-source technology, emphasizing decentralized models that encourage open collaboration.
Creative Code Workshops
Participants can learn to design their own digital instruments and livecode musical patterns.
