- Laurel Halo heads up a typically eclectic lineup from the s.M.i.L.e. crew.
- Organized on unceded Coast Salish territory, which include the xʷməθkwəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, & səl̓ilwətaɁɬ Indigenous nations -- colonially known as Vancouver. s.M.i.L.e. stands with Indigenous nations' right to self-determination and autonomy. ★★★ LAUREL HALO ★★★ [dj] (Berlin, Hyperdub / Livity Sound) https://soundcloud.com/laurelhalo Heavy, mutilated strains of electronic music with influence from the sounds of Detroit, UK and Germany – Laurel Halo’s music is shapeshifting, moody and ecstatic. The Michigan-born and Berlin-based artist has been a mainstay of the London-based label Hyperdub, who released her breakout, divisive debut album Quarantine in 2012. The record received critical acclaim, and was named Wire Magazine’s Album of the Year. Since then she’s released two more albums – 2013’s Chance of Rain for Hyperdub, 2015’s In Situ for Honest Jon’s – and toured extensively with a live hardware PA. In addition, Laurel hosted a regular show on Berlin Community Radio until it’s closure, having originally cut her teeth as a freeform DJ on the legendary WCBN-FM station in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She has collaborated with John Cale, Julia Holter, David Borden, Daniel Wohl, and Metahaven among others.Halo has also composed the soundtrack for Still Be Here, a Transmediale/CTM film commission starring the Japanese virtual popstar, Hatsune Miku, which debuted at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and was most recently shown at the Barbican Hall in London. Her latest album, Dust, is due out on Hyperdub in late June. ★★★ El Ángel Exterminador ★★★ [dj] (Goo) Max Ammo is a non binary latinx multidisciplinary artist from Mexico City who currently lives and works on the unceded and traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. They work focuses on illustration, animation and graphic design, and more recently producing music and DJing under “Goo”. El Ángel Exterminador (DJ) is a new extremity of Goo that sheds light on current and past Latin American producers without shying away from global sounds that run parallel and compliment the music from the South and it’s diaspora. Both solo projects are united by Max’s love for sleazy beats, goopy textures, sticky synths, and the vocals to be gritando en español. ★★★ Sebastian Ruslan ★★★ [dj] (s.M.i.L.e.) https://soundcloud.com/sebastianruslan Sebastian Ruslan is a DJ, producer, and curator from Vancouver, B.C. He is a founder and curator of local collective s.M.i.L.e. as well as immunity, an online mix series and platform. He is one half of Peace Field alongside Baby Blue, and has recently produced for Yayoyanoh as Swerve Twins, a collaboration with Jade Statues. As a DJ he has supported artists like John Beltran, Hitmakerchinx, DJ Lag, and Nídia, and has performed live sets at Mutek, New Forms Festival, and S1 Portland. His work has been covered in Noisey, VICE, Dummy Mag, Resident Advisor, Tiny Mix Tapes, Exclaim, and Discorder. ★★★ s.M.i.L.e.
