We’ve learned so much in five years.
We’ve learned that we can count on community support when we need it. We’ve learned that we’re at our happiest in the club and surrounded by beautiful friends and strangers, dancing and raving together. We’ve learned a lot about throwing parties and how to create spaces where as many people as possible can be comfortable to let go and explore themselves.
We’ve learned that milestones stay with us, emotionally, for a long time. We’ve learned that five years is something to be proud of, and that we’ve long wanted to do a party which was exactly as we envisioned it. We’ve learned a lot of lessons in how to make that space exist.
We’ve learned that we miss some of the energy of early Cool Rooms at XOXO - where the vibe hornier, and the bodies sweatier. We’ve learned that to properly lose ourselves in the party, we want venue staff who we feel looked after by and sound that resonates clearly through our whole body. We’ve learned that we feel best about an event when we don’t make any compromises in the lead-up, and do everything possible to make our utopian club vision exist. We’ve learned that it takes a lot of work to bring these visions into reality, and that we’ll need an indefinite hiatus to look after ourselves after putting so much into this one.
Our Fifth Birthday is a celebration of us, you, and our vision of what’s possible to create for one night in a temporary world where we hope you can be safe, be free, and be your most fabulous self.

When DJ Haram steps behind the decks, traditional boundaries of mixing are forbidden. Drums are at the core of Haram’s approach. She speaks through rhythm, expertly layering percussion in her tracks as hand drums roll atop bassweight, with sparse elements of melody facilitating tension and release. An idiosyncratic voice and visionary, she flies the flag of the queer Arab diaspora as a leading light reflecting both a global community and her own distinct set of influences.
Haram welds darbuka-driven rhythms to Jersey, Baltimore, and Philly Club percussion, merging her shared childhood contexts of traditional Middle Eastern dance music and her upbringing in New Jersey, her formative interests in DIY and noise music working as joinery. The result is thrilling - Haram channels the ecstatic energy of spiritual Eastern musics with the grit and swagger of regional US club sounds. Her recent EP, ‘Grace’, on Hyperdub is a masterclass in doing more with less; every sample and element working cohesively in conversation with each other, building a new reality from her experience. Her full range is flexed in her work as 700 Bliss (alongside Moor Mother), writing songs that feel at once urgent, angry, and galvanizing.
The Discwoman affiliate carries the urgency of their music and punk attitude into her selections, embracing risk, unpredictability, and spontaneity, creating frenetic whirlwinds of sound to send you spinning. She draws tracks to provoke a range of moods - tension, rapture, desire, pulling from genres as broad as booty bounce, rap, pop, footwork, gqom, and other global club sounds. Haram creates chaos and invites dancers to play, move, and explore their feelings with her, together in the storm.

CCL’s emotions pour into all their work.Their involvement with music - as a DJ, queer organiser, and producer - is a constant reflection of their connection with and dedication to their community. The worlds they have built are shaped from the kaleidoscopic psychedelia of eclectic records they carry, the hazy dancefloors of which they engage as a scene figurehead, ambassador, and dancer; their deep appreciation for their peers; and the potential of healing oneself and others through shared experiences of music and dance.
CCL’s has an exceptional ability as a DJ to recontextualise genres and sounds. After spending years organising queer events in Seattle and honing their singular sound, their mix ‘Ode to the Queer Steppas’ broke them into a wider global consciousness. It was a love letter, composed of 66 minutes of slippery dubstep deftly sewn together, gifted to an imagined, blissful queer dancefloor. It had a massive impact, making Resident Advisor’s Best Mixes of Decade list, and for many listeners providing a fresh, fluid, and free-flowing take on a familiar sound.
CCL’s 2019 saw them move from strength-to-strength, playing some of the most respected dance music events in the world - Unsound in Krakow, Rural in Japan, Movement in Detroit to name a few - while their sound evolved alongside their personal experiences. In a series of blistering mixes for Crack Magazine, FACT, Mixmag, and others, CCL showed a knack for creating a special, sensual kind of disorientation. They demonstrated a particular ability to pull listeners and dancers into a colourful sonic vortex, dissolving boundaries of tempo and genre, helping people lose themselves in one another. They crafted a unique sonic palette drawn from dusty record bins around the globe, tracks from close friends and contemporaries; across bass, electro, techno, dubwise steppers, footwork, post-punk, and beyond. They continued to organise their raucous queer raves as part of the TUF collective in Seattle, while their productions (written alongside friend and fellow Seattle resident Flora FM) emerged on labels including Planet Euphorique and Fever AM. These had much in common with CCL’s DJ sets, resulting in heady tracks full of whirling polyrhythms, yet another arrow in their quiver to affect the hearts and bodies of listeners.
CCL excels in the late foggy hours of the night and early ones of the morning, when hearts are open and bodies are loose. We couldn’t imagine a better closer for our fifth birthday.

Kiki House of Dévine is Melbourne’s first vogue house, named after the expression of divine energy, the balance of masculinity and femininity, the epitome of the Divine. Founded by Mother Kiki Dévine, they are a house that represents love, community, respect, loyalty, strength, inclusivity, empowerment and encouragement. Their performances are electrifying and they’ve firmly stamped their presence in the scene after their hugely successful first Housewarming Ball.
Ballroom was birthed in the 80’s and 90’s New York underground, with primarily queer and trans Black and Latinx folks forging safe spaces for performance, and family that did not exist otherwise. Ballroom has been immensely influential on both underground queer culture (and often co-opted by mainstream culture), contemporary club music, performance, and queer identity. Kiki House of Dévine carries that lineage into Naarm’s present while remaining connected with a wider national community (and Houses like the legendary Slé) and events like Sissy Ball; as well the wider global scene.
They’re here to break down walls and vogue down in all spaces ~ we’re bringing them in for a red hot performance right before DJ Haram.

Do these two even need introducing? Jennifer Loveless and Makeda are two artists who have been incredibly influential on Cool Room, masters of their craft, both with a constant desire to evolve and take risks. Jenn’s deep intuitive connection with the dancefloor and emotional sensibility sees her blending house and techno expertly, creating new narratives with tracks across the dance music spectrum and creating moments of dancefloor unity and raucous vibe. Makeda’s approach as a DJ leans towards more angular sounds, with a tendency to challenge listeners, move them to unexpected rhythms, and push the boundaries of the form.
We couldn’t just pick one or the other so we had to go with both ~ come early to hear of Naarm’s finest going head 2 head, back 2 back, butt 2 butt, for an extended set to kick off celebrations.
