The event is a partnership between Lost Souls of Saturn, The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and MeanRed Productions, and takes place on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 6:00PM EST. It will be live streamed on Facebook, Youtube, Twitch, Instagram and the MOCAD website. The evening will present the world premiere of the film Transmission by Lost Souls of Saturn and video artist Aaron Kulik. It will begin with a live audio-visual mix (6pm EST), followed by a screening of Transmission (7pm EST), concluding with an Q+A session (from 7.45pm EST). The discussion and Q+A session will include Seth Troxler and Phil Moffa from Lost Souls of Saturn, video artist Aaron Kulik and moderated by Elysia Borowy-Reeder (MOCAD). The ‘Transmission’ film is a joint collaboration between Lost Souls of Saturn and video artist Aaron Kulik, and is soundtracked by the eponymous debut album by Lost Souls of Saturn, released on R&S Records. An earlier version of the film was first presented within their AV installation, also called Transmission. This was presented during Art Basel in Switzerland in summer 2019, before being exhibited as part of the ‘Sweet Harmony: Rave | Today’ show at London’s Saatchi Gallery. This will be the first time the film has been shown outside of the installation, and has been updated and revised for this special screening presentation. The audio and video of the film draws inspiration from the Detroit and New York techno and house scenes of the turn of the century. In particular, the work references the contemporary and historic relationships of these communities to science fiction and technology, activism, and art. Lost Souls of Saturn combine these influences with tropes borrowed from postmodern philosophy, conspiracy theory, Afro-futurism, and Eastern mysticism to create a personal mythology that asks us to question our experience within the world. Seth Troxler and Phil Moffa have been working together for years, developing a multidisciplinary live music project with opaque additional participants, congregating to combine music, imagery, and storytelling into an inextricably linked unified immersive experience. The live stream begins with a mix of exclusive, specially recorded music, and presented with accompanying visuals by Aaron Kulik. Phil Moffa from LSOS says: “These two presentations, an hour of new works and the film Transmission, represent our collaboration with visual artist Aaron Koolik and an introduction to our mythology. Viewers will have the opportunity to experience parts of the Transmission installation, an alternate version of our eponymous album, and an hour of unreleased material, both audio and visual.” Support arts education in Detroit during this crisis!
