Die Klanginstallation ‚eleven songs – halle am berghain‘ von Sam Auinger und Hannes Strobl (tamtam) verwandelt die Kesselhalle des ehemaligen Fernheizwerks Berlin-Friedrichshain in einen besonderen Klangraum. Eigens konzipiert für die schiere Größe und Architektur des Raums aus massivem Beton, aktiviert das neue Werk von tamtam die imposante Architektur des Raumensembles mit akustischen Mitteln. Die Industriehalle mit den gigantischen, von der Decke herabhängenden Kohleschütten und massiven Pfeilern, ist dabei Kulisse und Reibungsfläche zugleich. Den Besuchenden eröffnen sich immer wieder neue klangliche Zustände, Stimmungen und sonore Perspektiven. Der Raum ist Instrument.
Sam Auinger und Hannes Strobl verbindet eine langjährige künstlerische Freundschaft, die sich in vielen gemeinsamen Kompositionen und Klanginstallationen ausdrückt. Als ‚farben/raumfarben‘ bezeichnen die beiden in Berlin lebenden Künstler eine Werkreihe, die sie seit 2003 gemeinsam entwickeln. ‚farben/raumfarben‘ sind sowohl ortsgebundene Langzeitkompositionen als auch poetische Klangräume. Die Grundlage einer jeden Komposition bilden die architektonischen, funktionalen und sozialen Charakteristika eines Ortes, die sich in dessen Klanglichkeit, Geräuschen und Rhythmen widerspiegeln. In ihrer neuen ‚raumfarben‘-Arbeit ‚eleven songs – halle am berghain‘ bringen tamtam erstmals die funktionale Architektur eines postindustriellen Raumensembles zum Klingen.

The sound installation ‘eleven songs - halle am berghain’ by Sam Auinger and Hannes Strobl (tamtam) transforms the machine hall of the former Berlin-Friedrichshain district heating plant into a unique resonance space. Specially concepted for the sheer size and architecture of the solid concrete venue, the new work by tamtam activates the imposing architecture of the room ensemble through acoustic means. The industrial hall with the gigantic coal chutes hanging from the ceiling and its massive pillars is both a backdrop and a frictional surface. Visitors are continually met by new sonic conditions, moods and sonorous perspectives. The room as an instrument.
Sam Auinger and Hannes Strobl have a longstanding artistic friendship that is expressed in many joint compositions and sound installations. Since 2003 the two artists, who both live in Berlin, have been developing a series of works named ‘farben/raumfarben’. ‘farben/raumfarben’ are both site-specific long-term compositions and poetic sound spaces in which the viewers experience a place as an instrument. Each composition is formed by by the architectural, functional and social characteristics of the given space, which are reflected in its sound, its noises and rhythms. In their new ‘raumfarben’ installation ‘eleven songs - halle am berghain’, tamtam for the first time make the functional architecture of a post-industrial space ensemble speak.
