LAFAWNDAH X CHURCH OF SOUND PRESENT: THE FIFTH SEASON, a performance of Lafawndah’s latest album of the same name, joined by a cast assembled from some of London's most exciting musicians: Theon Cross (Tuba), Nathaniel Cross (Trombone), Valentina Magaletti (Percussion), and Coby Sey (Synth/Vocals).
Filmed at St James Church, Clapton, the home of Church of Sound, this is the first performance with the full ensemble, documented and dramatised with the directorial eye of Lafawndah and Trustfall, and with stage design from Ylan Lucas. Here the elemental, electro-acoustic chamber ballads of the album are given a new, unpredictable and communal life, captured in Lafawndah's inimitable synthesis of volatility and stagecraft.
The Fifth Season was released to widespread acclaim last month by Latency Records, an album of stories where a broken heart can tear apart a continent. Inspired by her encounter with author NK Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy, Lafawndah both pays homage to and extends further the elemental, emotionally charged myths of Jemisin’s books. Grounded in the newly invited spontaneity and freedom of process brought about by session with her ensemble collaborators, The Fifth Season also features interpretations of hybrid-folk godfather Beverly Glenn-Copeland’s “Don’t Despair” and acid-impressionist prodigy Lili Boulanger’s “Old Buddhist Prayer.”Album highlight “You, at the End” deploys a poem by poet-performer Kate Tempest to aching, rift-tearing ends, anchoring Lafawndah as a descendent of forebearers Brigitte Fontaine and Scott Walker - a born theatric whose acid humor warps the sub-continental undertow of her emotive storytelling.
