After a soft launch at the end of 2020, Kris Swales finally launches his debut novel The Drop as intended: with other humans, celebrating the music that provides the novel's beating heart. And for anyone who can't make it down to Winn Lane, the launch will be streamed live worldwide courtesy of The QUIVR.
Joining Kris on the day will be Brisbane club scene mainstays Cosmo Cater, Scott Walker and Fergus Alexander, laying down some of the 100+ timeless megabombs name-dropped in The Drop and whatever other classics they can cram into their record crates. Kris will also share some readings from the novel and be signing copies on the day.
ABOUT THE DROP
Earth’s population confined indoors. Virtual gigs and festivals the only form of entertainment. And a multinational company with control of supply lines, streaming and technology profiting from it all. When the coronavirus closed the planet down in March 2020, Kris had seen it all before – and had started writing about it in August 2018 in what became The Drop. What started as a love-letter to the dance music he loved spiralled into a satirical takedown of technology addiction, the corporate takeover of popular culture and mankind’s steadfast determination to destroy our planet. Think “Ready Player One and The Matrix going clubbing in the Black Mirror universe” and you’re on the right track.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Kris was a pivotal figure of Brisbane's electronic music scene from 2000-2010: drummer in live acts D-Ko, Silent Shadow and Segue; DJing and producing as Kris-Ko; and perhaps most importantly as long-time dance music editor at Time Off and then head of weekly clubbing bible 3D World, which lured him to Sydney in early 2010. Stints writing long-form features for Inthemix and copy for Red Bull Music Academy and Stereosonic (among others) followed, before a detour into news editing led Kris to three years working for MSN in India before arriving back in Sydney to his current gig as homepage editor at The Australian Financial Review.
