THE NAURU ELEGIES : A Portrait in Sound and Hypsographic Architecture The Nauru Elegies is a multimedia portrait of the island of Nauru and this unique work explores the island in a state of economic collapse and environmental devastation. The performance reflects colonial and post-colonial issues facing the digital economy of the 21st century translated into a string quartet, composed by DJ Spooky. DJ Spooky (aka Paul D. Miller) is a composer, multimedia artist and writer. His written work has appeared in The Village Voice, The Source, Artforum and Raygun amongst others. Miller's work as a media artist has appeared in the Whitney Biennial; The Venice Biennial for Architecture (2000); the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany; Kunsthalle, Vienna; The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Venice Biennial 2007, and the Miami/Art Basel fair of 2007. Miller has published Rhythm Science and Sound Unbound, by MIT Press. Miller's deep interest in reggae and dub has resulted in a series of compilations, remixes and collections of material from the vaults of the legendary Jamaican label, Trojan Records. Other releases include Optometry (2002), a jazz project featuring some of the best players in the downtown NYC jazz scene, and Dubtometry (2003) featuring Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Mad Professor. Miller's latest collaborative release, Drums of Death, features Dave Lombardo of Slayer and Chuck D of Public Enemy among others. He also produced material on Yoko Ono's new album Yes, I'm a Witch. Miller’s large scale, multimedia performance pieces include “Rebirth of a Nation” (now on DVD), and “Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica”. Joining Spooky in his live presentation will be Melbourne's own Silo Quartet with guest violist Helen Ireland. Silo String Quartet was founded by Cellist and Composer Caerwen Martin in 1998. Silo has performed regularly at the Melbourne International Jazz Festivals and Melbourne International Women in Jazz Festivals since 1999 working with such artists as Fiona Burnett, Belinda Moody, Antonio Tenace, David Chisholm and Quinsin Nachoff (Canada) and was the resident string quartet for the Federation Music Week International Composers Forum. Silo are currently recording a CD for the Federation of Australian Composers that showcases the best of Australia’s new string quartets. This year Silo have recorded a CD for Melbourne based dance company Ballett Lab entitled Origami, composed by David Chisholm. Silo also feature on the live ABC CD Soaring at Dawn for Jazz trio and String Quartet composed by soprano saxophonist Fiona Burnett. Recent work has included performing at Glen Eira Town Hall, Billilla House, Stonington Manor, Melba Hall, Bennetts Lane and Federation Square as well as many recording and performance projects for composers and popular artists including Dan Brodie, Millionaire Souls, CC Martini, Philip Gelbach and Johanna Selleck. Silo has broadcast live on ABC and Melbourne radio stations and features on Caerwen Martin's new soundtrack to the Australian feature film 'Lost and Found’ by David Blake. Video Installation Art prior to the show will be showcased by Netzair. Building on his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Multimedia, Netzair has spent years experimenting, shooting and producing his own unique content. Crosscutting live, graphic compositions to sync, his style allows you to see beyond a reel of pleasant images - you see the music. Striving to make the night's audio entertainment tangible, bringing sound to life, the visual experience is especially suited to an electronic environment where bass, glitch and snare can be translated optically. With a passion for live performance, it's not uncommon to see Netzair pushing out vision for ten or more hours straight, on festival stages alongside International and local Dj's, as well as club nights and community based video art events. http://www.netzair.com/ Pre-performance music provided by Dave Pham, expect the unusual.
