Whose House?! Battle of the Cities: Chicago x Detroit

  • 313 x 312 Detroit x Chicago Before mp3s and CDs. Before the Internet. These two cities created something truly unique and special. Something that the rest of the world wanted. It wasn’t just the music. It wasn’t just the partying and the raves. It was everything. The world wanted all of it. The soul, the funk, the groove, the beats. The tricksters, the mixers, the style, the vinyl. They wanted the dancing, the scratching, the warehouse, the community. That raw, unfiltered, unapologetic vibe. The world wanted what these two cities created. One might even say that these two cities contributed the most to what the world knows today as electronic music and the culture surrounding it. While it’s fairly common knowledge that Detroit was responsible for the birth of Techno, and Chicago was responsible for the birth of House, back in the formative years of both genres, there was a significant amount of overlap. While they started around the same time, the influence each city had on each other became more clear as time went on. The scene and the culture in both cities shared a lot of similarities. Artists from both cities would often make the the 4 hour drive on I-94 to exchange music and play shows. Chicago DJs would frequent The Music Institute, and Detroit artists would frequent The Music Box. While competition and DJ battles were common, the competition was healthy. It pushed the cities to further their art form and skills. The partnership and culture melding that took place between these two cities helped to shape electronic music and the underground culture that would eventually spread across the world. While Detroit Techno eventually began to take a more distinct form with groups like Underground Resistance and Drexciya shedding the overt disco influence that house music retained, there have always been Detroit artists inspired by house and Chicago artists whose sound could be considered techno. The open flow of ideas between the cities helped make the culture what it is today. In the spirit of tradition that helped to form this culture, we are bringing these two cities together to battle on the decks, with each city's artists experiencing their hometown crowd one weekend, and an away crowd the other weekend. We are celebrating this collaborative effort on Friday May 27th in Detroit and on Saturday June 4th in Chicago. The lineup will feature several of the legendary artists who were integral in the creation of house music and the culture the came with it. It will also feature some newer artists that hope to keep that culture and collaborative efforts alive in the modern era of electronic music.
