Sleep In — Slow Wave Phase

  • The sun sets, the shadows of the pillars in the factory dance and sway, creating a game of which only they know the rules. This time, you don't join in by dancing, but by spending the night in the huge exhibition hall on the first floor of Het HEM during the event Sleep IN: Slow Wave Phase. This event is inspired by Robert Rich's concept of "Sleep Concerts", which formed the basis for the Sleep IN series in Leipzig and was held for the first time last October as Slow Wave Phase in Het HEM. This year, the event returns and we are excited. Sleep IN: Slow Wave Phase is an overnight stay in the huge exhibition hall on the first floor of the HEM. During this special experiment, the participants will spend the evening and the night in the open hall accompanied by various musical acts. Besides the rows of pillars, rows of beds have been set up as an (almost absurd) setting for this experiment. The idea of sleeping together and the musical and auditory accompaniment give a new dimension to our ideas of what sleep is. It is very rare to share the intimacy of our sleep with so many people at once. When we spend time with others, our brains are much more active and our senses remain more alert - even in unconscious states such as when we sleep and when we dream. The evening begins with the opening performance by Jessica Ekomane. During this set you will experience the sunset and the transition from evening to night in a special way. Her quadraphonic performances are characterised by their physical effect. Through the interplay of psychoacoustics, the perception of rhythmic structures and the exchange of noise and melody, she seeks a state of catharsis as an effect of her music. Nina, Rural Juror, Pieter Jansen and no services accompany the rest of the night. The music and sounds of the artists provide extra stimulation while you sleep. These stimulations have an even greater effect on how you dream; dreams become more vivid and it seems as if you can remember more. You wake up during the sunrise where the first sunrays illuminate the factory hall, almost like a stand-alone exhibition. Haron Aumaj & Cucina Povera will perform together in the morning, giving a new meaning to 'waking up' and 'consciousness'. Expect an alternative to our existing idea of what sleep is. The setting, the artists and the experiment make for an unforgettable experience. Book your tickets soon.
