SOFT CENTRE brings their singular blend of experimental sound, live A/V performance and installations to Carriageworks for a one-day festival of boundary-pushing art and music, as part of Vivid Sydney 2022. Featuring an expansive program of creators from the local and global underground, including the world premiere of Sam Rolfes’ mixed-reality motion-capture play ‘3-2-1 RULE’ starring viral screamo queen Lil Mariko. Footwork pioneer RP Boo makes his Sydney debut alongside live performances by Japanese Breakcore legend Dj Scotch Egg, antifascist hardcore DJ Estoc and Indonesia’s Raja Kirik, who use homemade instruments to blend contemporary hard dance with shamanic Jathilan rhythms. Award winning Austrian filmmaker Rainer Kohlberger joins us for a hallucinatory visual trip with the premiere of ‘brainbows’, a new algorithmically generated live audio visual performance.
Witness one-off A/V collaborations between cult IDM producers DBR and Cypha and visual artists Joan Shin and Brigitte Podrasky, Plea Unit, featuring 3D animated visuals by Endless Prowl and rising Hip Hop MCs Teether, Bayang (tha Bushranger) and Sevy.
Locally, purveyors of ‘Grotto Rave’ - Air Max ’97 and SCAM, will be making their Loppy B live debut, alongside an experimental DJ set by Pure Space curator Mija Healey, Gamilaraay DJ Crescendoll performing alongside Queer pole collective Club Chrome, Sumn Conduit, featuring Dharawal vocalist Sonya Holowell and modular synthesist Ben Carey, and Makeda, pairing new song based works with roller figure skating. Manila based multi-disciplinary artist Leeroy New will collaborate with Western Sydney ambient composer Wytchings and Fillipinx performance artist Red Rey to present ‘Aliens of Manila’, exploring themes of cultural displacement, immigration and integration through the recycling of waste into sculptural armour for otherworldly beings. Finally, California Girls present a baroque melodrama inspired by the doom of Ingmar Bergman’s ‘The Seventh Seal’, titled ‘SILENCE IN HEAVEN’, with additional arrangements by Marcus Whale and art direction by Chloe Corkran.
