  • 29 Speedway is back June 1st at IRL Gallery with a noteworthy duo set from two distinguished innovators in the realm of improvisational electroacoustic music, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (a.k.a. Lichens and composer for the recent Candyman film) & Hisham A. Bharoocha (drummer for Kill Alters and previous member of Lightning Bolt & Black Dice). Supporting them will be sound artist and recent Issue Project Room Artist-In-Residence Sydney Spann, and Oakland California-based artist and musician Chris Duncan, operator of a small press and project space called LAND AND SEA. Nathan Harrington, often found djing on NTS Radio for shows such as Peking Spring and PAN, will also be spinning in between performances. ----- Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is an artist, curator and composer that works with voice and modular synthesizer for sound in the realm of spontaneous music. This aleatoric practice has also lent itself quite well to electroacoustic film music compositions. Along with analog video synthesis works, he has brought forth an A/V proposal that has been a focus of live performance and installation/exhibition. Lowe—who has made many records under the moniker Lichens—has also composed music for a number of film projects, but his most well-known work to date is the original soundtrack for Nia DaCosta's 2021 horror flick, Candyman. Lowe has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Score category as a result of this exceptional work. Hisham A. Bharoocha is a Japanese-born artist based in Brooklyn concentrating on creating visual art, photography, and music. In addition to being a founding member of the experimental rock group Black Dice, Bharoocha has performed in many bands touring the world, such as Pixeltan, Soft Circle, IIII, Nick Zinner's 41 Strings, Boredoms, and YOKUBARI. He has played prestigious venues such as the Sydney Opera House (Australia), ICP (London), and the Royal Festival Hall (London), Rockefeller Plaza (U.S.A.) among others. The most well-known performances have been the BOADRUM series, where up to 100 drummers perform with the band. Bharoocha has organized these performances alongside the core members of the band since 2007, and has played at the Barbican (London), the Ruhrtriennale (Halde Haniel Germany), and several All Tomorrow’s Parties festivals (London/Minehead/Tokyo). Sydney Spann, originally from Baltimore, MD, is a sound artist and musician based in New York. She works with synthesis, chance operations, recursive compositional processes and voice to intervene within a personal archive of field recordings, culminating in long form compositions and improvised performances. Her music engages the private experiences that shape public spaces, and the affective dynamics within childcare work. She has released albums with Ehse Records (Baltimore), She Rocks! (NYC), and Reading Group (NYC), with a full-length release forthcoming on Recital in 2022. She has performed at the High Zero Festival of Experimental Free Improvised Music, The Walters Art Museum, Bar Laika by e-flux, and in diy spaces and galleries throughout the US. Recent works for streaming include Sending up a Spiral of on Montez Press Radio and Attached/Detached (partial disappearance) for ISSUE Project Room’s With Womens Work Series. James K is a New York native multi-disciplinary artist who has honed her peculiar aesthetic to include a fusion of visual and sonic elements. Deeply rooted in a conscious art practice and a mythology of her own, her sound, equally organic and electronic, is a combination of odd dreams, hybridizing enchanted samples, ripped, broken and morphed rhythms, and vocals, both incomprehensible and appealing—forming a multifaceted identity. She received her BFA in Printmaking from The Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Bard, where she developed a critical multidisciplinary art practice shaped by feminist theory and writing. 29 Speedway is an NYC based record label and performance series featuring forward thinking improvisational music and live multimedia. Founded in 2020, 29S serves as a platform for artists exploring the fringes of interdisciplinary art, crossing through both physical and digital realms via sonic performance.
