Under_score are proud to present a dj set by special guest Lakuti (aka Lerato Khathi), head of the deep house labels Uzuri and Sud Electronic, and the brains behind London's legendary Sud Electronic parties.
Lerato has always loved a good bit of vinyl. Showing an early appreciation for soul and funk, she went on to inherit her grandfather's collection of jazz records, and was first out of the blocks when, in the late eighties, the first batch of Chicago house platters made their way to her home town of Johhanesburg. Falling in love with the new sound, she set up her first club in an abandoned theatre and set about polishing her DJ style. By 2002, she had relocated to London and established the Sud Electronic clubnight, where for eight years she has played as a resident.
In that time, Sud has become synonymous with underground house music in the capital, attracting delighted revellers and discerning househeads alike. Lerato has defined its sound with her sets; a mix of deep dirty house, disco and soul music, with an emphasis on groove and feeling rather than bpms.
As Sud's promoter, she has championed new talent, flying over hot names like Prosumer, Jus Ed and Levon Vincent, as well as more established acts such Juan Atkins, Rik Wade and Daniel Bell. Now with a new record label, the highly regarded Uzuri, to add to her list of projects, her portfolio is growing almost as fast as her vinyl collection.
Lerato takes time out from her busy schedule to come to Bristol to play at under_score on Friday 9th April.
