  • Electronic pioneer Matthew Herbert (Bodily Functions and Around The House) comes to matter on Wednesday 9th June, when he’ll perform with his Big Band as part of the upcoming European tour in support of One Club – the second installment of Herbert’s One Trilogy, during which he will return to his dance roots. Herbert and his band will be joined by Eska Mtungwazi and the Goldsmiths Vocal Ensemble, who’ll provide vocals and choral backing for the performance. Eska is signed to Herbert’s renowned Accidental Records label, and is leader of the ensemble, who performed previously with Herbert’s band last year at London’s Barbican, to rave reviews. Support for the matter performance is to be announced soon. One Tour will take place as soon as Matthew completes the recording of One Club (due for release in June 2010) and will include original material from the album alongside a retrospective journey. Matthew said: “one club is designed to be both a functioning body of dance music in its own right, but at the same time a celebration of the temporary communities that come together weekly around the world in clubs. since the record is made entirely from sounds recorded in one night at a german night club, the audience is implicated directly in the outcome of the music and hopefully stronger links are made between the dj, the music itself and the act of dancing. “for a long time now, clubs have accepted a corporate version of reality, with excessive branding and sponsorship, yet reluctant to acknowledge the potential political or social power implicit in large numbers of young people gathering in public places. “the one club project is intended to offer an alternative version of that relationship between the audience, the building, the locality, the political, the performer and the music. in many ways, my role is also challenged since i have not generated any of the sounds myself, but merely offered instructions to the people there, and recorded the results that came back at me. the record is made of their noises, their voices, their bodies and their neighbours. “the record is intended as a document of one night in one club. a celebration of a typically fragmented, spontaneous community brought together for one night only through the idea of music and dancing. presumably that group of people will never again be together again in one room, but there is now music to be the memory and, hopefully, move the feet.” Matthew is releasing three albums in 2010 as part of the One Trilogy. One One, released in April, is his most intimate recording yet with Matthew singing for the first time. One Club is the second in the series. Finally, One Pig, made entirely from sounds sampled from the life, death and eating of a pig, will be issued in September. The samples used for the 10-track dance album One Club were recorded in their entirety at the Robert Johnson in Frankfurt, Germany, between 8pm and 10pm on September 30 2009. Matthew recorded dancing, kissing, laughter, mobile phone rings and a plethora of sounds. He even recorded private conversations and sounds from the toilets. The resulting album will be given free to each of the 600 people who took part. Matthew will return to the Robert Johnson to play the album later this year.
