Like most dance music junkies in Northern Ireland, Phil Kieran was not the same after his late night visits to the seminal Sugar Suit. The Belfast club’s open and hedonistic approach left its mark on the young producer, rejecting any ties to genres or fashion in his path as a producer. This broad approach has had an impact on everything Phil has done since.
So far Phil Kieran has released breaks on Electrix, Mob and Eukabreaks; experimental tones on Berlin’s Industry Trama and House and Techno on Bugged Out, Skint, Turtle Trax and Kingsize (where he delivered the stunning Vitalian House, with echoes of traditional Chicago house on a 12” called Chunka Funk). As the track becomes a smash he remixes Slam, Midfield General, Arthur Baker and Meat Katie. Back home there have been collaborations with Product Deluxe, Slide and Basic, based in Belfast and his own club, Sector 1, where he was able to showcase live Irish electronica leaving a positive impression on the city’s now definitely vibrant dance scene. In his long residency at Shine, arguably Belfast’s most influential club, Phil played to the likes of Richie Hawtin, Umek and Justin Robertson (who recently selected two of Phil’s tracks for a compilation). His love for his club saw him launch Shine Records, featuring material from John Carter and Slam.
Phil Kieran’s music is a mix of techno, electro and breaks. With bass lines, sharp synth, sometimes dark, always funky and dancefloor driven. Think Dave Clarke and Carl Craig in the early 90’s and you’ll be right. The growing demand for Phil Kieran has led to an increase in bookings. In his passport there are stamps from China, Poland, Israel. In the UK he has had engagements at The End and Bugged Out and Creamfields, plus every underground club worth mentioning. The single My House for Skint Records became one of his signature tracks. His track Juicy was used by James Lavelle for the Global Underground (#23) dedicated to the city of Barcelona.
