  • SAT 3RD JULY... FACE Showcase, as part of The Rainbow Summer Street Festival. GUESTS INCLUDE: NICK CURLY (COCOON) REBOOT (CADENZA) RIVA STARR (DIRTYBIRD) KRYSKO (WAREHOUSE PROJ) ELLIOT CROFT (FACE) SCOTT BLEEPZ (FACE) The Rainbow Warehouse, as part of The Rainbow Summer Street Festival 7pm til 6am **In The Warehouse** FACE with Guest Dj - NICK CURLY (Cocoon / Murmur / Germany)... As one of the main protagonists behind the so-called Mannheim sound, the meteoric rise of Nick Curly is one of the telling stories to unfold over the last two years and bears proof of what is possible to accomplish, even in these rapidly changing times for electronic music. Being at the helm of Cecille and 8 bit Records, two of the most exciting labels to emerge from the German underground scene certainly doesn’t do his reputation any harm, but without doubt it is the combustible nature of his killer dancefloor 12”s and a burgeoning reputation as an A list DJ which has taken his name worldwide. Releases on labels such as Cocoon, Murmur, Supernature, 8 bit and Plastic City laid the groundwork of what might follow back in 2007/8, before this year Nick came back and unleashed his ‘Series’ collection on 8 Bit and Cecille, which proved to be his biggest releases to date, and then following it up with his debut smash ‘Pujante’ on Cocoon before capping it all with a debut DJ mix compilation ‘Reasons’ which was released on 8 Bit in June. All this before 2009’s half way stage. The remainder of the year sees Nick touring the Reasons’ compilation with his debut tours of South America in August, North America in October and Australia in November. Whilst back in Europe in the autumn, he will catch his breath long enough to join his label mates on the 2 Years of Cecille European tour, which hits key clubs such as Fabric, Panoramabar, Studio Martin, Goa, Harry Klein, and Open House, Paris. ************************************** Plus Guest Dj - REBOOT (Cadenza / Germany)... Germany’s Frank Heinrich aka Reboot is known to lay down tracks that are so visceral they’re positively orgasmic. His approach to performance and production is based around what he calls ‘complex polyrhythmic architecture’ – not forgetting a musical heritage that spans house, techno, world music and jazz. With proven releases on such labels as Below, Cadenza and Cocoon, an explosive live show and a DJ career that’s more versatile than many imagine, Reboot has earned every inch of his reputation as a speaker-freaker. In fact, he now spearheads what others are calling the new sound of Frankfurt, alongside friends like Chris Tietjen, Robert Dietz and Markus Fix. Aachen-born Frank moved to the Frankfurt-Offenbach area when he was just six years old. Here, he received a classical music education and picked up a range of instruments. These ranged from the melodica and accordion to organs and keyboards. However, a lifelong love affair with electronic music commenced and flourished after he first made contact through radio. Aged 13, he began DJing and by 14 he was producing his own tracks using kit that he’d bought with pocket money. Officially, he was too young to go clubbing but that didn’t stop him. After all, it was the early-90s and the techno radiating from this region was more than the talk of the town. Later, a friend smuggled him into Sven Väth’s seminal Omen club and boom – his electronic ambition was cemented. He also, as they say, ‘forgot to go home’… In 1992 Frank and Marco Delle Donne formed Delle & Heinrich: a longstanding production and performance partnership that was never about going pro but more about having fun. Together they explored the scene and had a couple of releases (on Combi Int. and i220) before finally parting in 2006. During this period Frank also continued to work solo, experimenting with warmer sounds outside the increasingly tough techno of the clubs. To this end, he would also play in lounges and bars, mixing all kinds of music, whether he was simply DJing or jamming live, fusing his knowledge into a compelling show that went way beyond a laptop/midi controller. Naturally, such intrinsic ‘world’ flavours as African and Latin rhythms continue to infuse his sound to this day. Seemingly hard-wired for success from the get-go, Frank’s Reboot moniker came to life in 2005. This was the perfect platform for his DJing, evolving live shows and productions that he wrote, engineered – the whole shebang – using traditional analogue machines as well as a laptop. In 2007, the hypnotic, melodic ‘Charlotte’, his first production as Reboot, was released by his friends at Below. It shone a light on his skills and saw his profile soar like never before. He then realised another ambition when he made his debut on Cadenza with ‘Be Tougher’, a much darker offspring that Luciano adopted on his Fabric 41 mix. Another massive hit for Reboot was the mind-warp of ‘Vandong’, which blew up as part of his Sidekick EP. All the time, Frank carried on pushing the possibilities of DJing and live performance as Reboot. And thus his barrage of booty-shaking beats spread rapidly around the globe, from Robert-Johnson and Cocoon Club in Germany, to Womb in Japan, D-Edge in Brazil and Fabric in the UK. Using mostly his own material, he also locked a groove on Cocoon’s 2008 Disco Invaders mix compilation, alongside compadres Johnny D and Chris Tietjen. Frank continues his sensory assault into 2009 with an abundance of productions and live/DJ sets. He has furthermore joined Luciano’s dynamic Æther project, which is like a Cadenza live electronic band, complete with visuals. So enjoy the ride, because the Reboot recipe for a good time is (and always has been) about melding the cerebral with the visceral to detonate our gut reactions to dance, to connect and to get in-sync. ************************************** Plus Guest Dj - RIVA STARR (Dirtybird / Kindisch / Italy)... Riva Starr is a name that should be very familiar to anyone with an interest in modern house music. Having shot to the top after a string of head turning releases and remixes on some of the most talked about labels, Riva Starr couldn’t be hotter right now. What’s quite remarkable though is how quickly Stefano Miele, aka Riva Starr has established himself so prominently on a DJ/producer circuit that’s notoriously difficult to break into. It doesn’t hurt that Claude VonStroke and Jesse Rose, the two men who sit on top of the pile, happen to be two of his biggest fans. So, how did the man from Naples rise from unknown to major player in just 2 years? Well, the truth is that Stef is no newcomer to making music, in fact he’s been producing and releasing a wide-range of sounds under different guises for the past 10 years, including 2 albums. Like all good producers he’s earned his stripes and his current status is down to two things, hard work and talent. Oh and the World Wide Web of course. That’s right, like so many successful new musicians today, Riva Starr is “big on the blogs” and it’s exactly here, giving free music away that Stef was able to not only test-run new material but also form an army of loyal and excited fans before he had even released a record. With a love of reinventing any music that inspires him, Stef created the term “Snatch!” as a way of describing his bootleg remix style of snatching/pick pocketing other music styles for his own. It’s also a play on words with the type of folk/Balkan/rock music he draws inspiration from, often carrying that gypsy spirit. Having given away a number of widely praised and blogged Snatch! mixes online (his recent remix of ‘The End’ by The Doors has well over 10,000 downloads on Discobelle alone), it wasn’t too long before some of them found their way into the DJ sets of some of the biggest names on the circuit. Two of those DJ’s were Jesse Rose and Claude VonStroke, who both approached Stef for official releases on their labels after witnessing the amazing crowd reaction for his Snatch! remixes, since then there’s been no looking back. Having doted up his first two releases for Claude’s ‘Dirtybird’ and Jesse’s ‘Front Room’ in 2007, he followed these up with another two for them in 2008 as well as two more for Fatboy Slim’s famous ‘Southern Fried Records’ and a 12” on ‘Kindisch’, the more techy sub-label of the brilliant ‘Get Physical’ label in Berlin. As well as remixing the likes of The Gossip, Derrick Carter, KC Flight and Fatboy Slim and seeing his DJ bookings go through the roof (if you want Stef to play at your club, you’ll currently be waiting 6 months), he’s managed to rewrite the rules on how to establish yourself as an International DJ/producer. Like all the great names in dance music the Riva Starr sound is very distinctive, with fans as wide-ranging as Tiesto, Carl Cox, Ricardo Villalobos and Annie Mac, he manages to make high quality accessible house music that unites many different styles and DJ’s. He’s always described it as “Snatch” although it was his good friend Laidback Luke that recently described his style as “Mezcla”, a universal Spanish word that’s used to describe a mixture of different things that seems to aptly apply to Stef’s music with his World influences and eclectic beats. You’ll hear throughout his upcoming album “If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade” out on Made to Play January 2010, but mainly on the first single ‘I Was Drunk’, ‘Bulgarian Chicks’ and ‘Black Cat, White Cat’, that Stef draws inspiration from the Balkan music scene, an area of music that’s always been a personal interest. He shows his depth of knowledge by using the brilliant Noze on ‘I Was Drunk’, as well as showcasing his self-edited video that uses footage from Balkan director Kusturica (over 40,000 hits on YouTube and counting). The single has already gained great support at Radio 1, although the Balkan sound is just one style that Riva Starr is associated with and throughout the album you’ll hear many twists and turns as it progresses, providing you with that true ‘Mezcla’ experience. ************************************** Along with Guest Dj - KRYSKO (The Warehouse Project / Manchester)...
