We kick off our parties on Mayday – Saturday 1st May at Manchesters’ Sound Control with the legendary Doc Martin. Doc started playing House back in San Francisco back in 1986 and has held his own throughout time delivering House Music to different generations and still rocking the floors of the world today. Expect a 6 hour set taking in deep house, cosmic disco, acid, techno, garage – you name it. Don’t miss this….
If there ever was a DJ Legend in house, Doc Martin would be it. But then, Doc would never accept such a title even if it happens to be true, because Doc is not only a legendary talent but a legendarily humble man.
The Doc began his mission on the decks back in the summer of 1986. His focus on house music from the land of funk and disco, was triggered while playing the club and warehouse scene in San Francisco.
He was instrumental in kicking off the west coast rave scene, so important and influential were his sets that they were immortalised on vinyl. On Dubtribe Sound Systems ode to the early days of San Fran clubbing, We used to Dance the voiceover gives a nod to the Doc.
Dubtribe’s Sunshine Jones, an ex-punk rocker and Bay Area native, taking in the still-emerging sounds of hip-hop. At club Townsend, Doc Martin broke out some house music. “One night he just started playing Marshall Jefferson and Ten City, and it was a real shock,”
Doc states himself back in those days that he was influenced by the likes of Manchester’s New Order that eventually swung his thoughts towards House and less away from his Hip Hop sets at Club Townsend in San Francisco.
He became the first non New York DJ to become resident at legendary club Twilo and soon became a regular in the UK – starting off on his first weekend over here back in 1991 – playing Ministy of Sound on the Friday, Back to Basics on the Saturday and the infamous Full Circle parties on the Sunday.
To quote Doc himself :-
“When I came to UK, cos I worked in a record store, I was Mr I’ve got the Tunes. But every record I played someone in the box would go “Oh, I got that months ago” or “oh, it’s finally come out in the US.”
So I realised to do okay in the UK it’s not about having everything first, it’s about playing great music. I saw people here that didn’t even mix just play really great music. I heard people like Weatherall and thought “Oh My God”
At Back to Basics, the first time, the energy there. I was Djing from the back of a truck. There’s all these mad English people with their beers in the air all going mental to deep house and I’m like, it’s just a different way of expressing energy towards the music.
Fast forward 20 years and we bring you Doc Martin to Manchester off the back of an illustrious career spanning over 25 years for our first I:AM party.
These days his 8 hours sets take in deep house, cosmic disco, acid, techno, garage – you name it.
The Doc has played at a lot of the great parties and venues in the UK and worldwide as well being a resident at London’s Fabric for 4 years, which saw him play every 2 months over that time. With 2 Radio 1 Essential Mixes, a Fabric CD and numerous great compilations under his belt we’re ready for Doc Martin to cross the line on our first epic DJ 6 hour marathon.
